NORTHRIDGE, Calif. — UC Irvine overcame a strong third-set response from CSUN and defeated the Matadors 25-15, 26-24, 19-25, 25-20 in a Big West match on Saturday at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
Senior Hailey Brockway led CSUN (8-10, 4-4 Big West) with 20 kills, while Iye Okolo added a season-high 12 kills on .588 hitting, and Tatiana Turgeon matched her career-high with 11 kills (.450).
Senior setter Katie Kolar finished with 43 assists and 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Libero Paige Sentes, who took over as CSUN'a all-time leader in digs on Friday, recorded 12 digs and four assists in the loss.
HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN struggled to establish an early rhythm in the opening set. Trailing 9-7 following a Brockway kill, UC Irvine responded by claiming 11 of the next 16 points to take control. Leading 20-12, the Anteaters closed the set with a block and an attack error, winning 25-15.
The Matadors looked poised to even the match in the second set after building a 15-8 lead on a Kolar kill. A Turgeon kill opened up a 21-13 advantage before UC Irvine rallied behind a late service run, pulling within three at 23--20. A Julia Bazylevych kill set CSUN up with multiple set points before an Abby Pekrul kill sent the Anteaters on 6-0 run to complete the improbable 26-24 victory and a 2-0 lead.
CSUN responded emphatically in the third set. Okolo and Audrey Nuckols helped the Matadors open a 2-0 lead, and CSUN later used a 7-2 run to move ahead 14-8 on another Brockway kill. A UC Irvine ace trimmed the margin to 18-15, but CSUN regained control and finished the set on an Okolo kill followed by a Brockway service ace, winning 25-19.
The fourth set featured another CSUN surge. UC Irvine led 14-9 before the Matadors rallied back behind a 7-2 run to tie the score at 16-16 on a Turgeon-Kolar block. The Anteaters answered with a 4-1 run to push the lead back to four at 20-17. The Matadors would get within two at 22-20 on Bockway's 20th kill of the night but the Anteaters scored the final three points to close out the match 25-20.
UC Irvine, which improved to 8-11 overall and 6-2 in the Big West, was led by Taylor Boice's 17 kills and Abby Pekrul's 16. The Anteaters, who posted a .292 team hitting clip to CSUN's .227, out-blocked the Matadors 13.5 to 5.0 in the win.
