HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN set the tone early in the opening set. After Long Beach State held a 3-1 advantage, the Matadors responded with a 7-2 run to open up an 8-6 lead. CSUN extended its lead to 16-12 and maintained its advantage the rest of the way, closing out the set on a kill from Brockway.
The second set was the most competitive of the night. The teams battled through seven ties, with Long Beach State overcoming a 12-9 CSUN lead to take a 13-12 lead on a Sidney Hamaker kill. The Matadors answered with a 6-4 run to take a 19-17 following an Okolo kill. The Matadors continued to apply pressure and closed the set with a 25-18 victory, capped by another Brockway kill.
CSUN took command from the beginning of the third set, jumping out to a 4-1 lead and never trailing. The Matadors then used a 6-1 stretch to build a 10-5 advantage before pulling away. Bazylevych sparked a dominant run from the service line, helping CSUN score 11 of the next 13 points and take a 21-8 lead. Long Beach State managed a late rally, but the Matadors finished the sweep, 25-13
HEAD COACH AQUILES MONTOYA SAID
"We put in a really good week of practice where we had kind of a mind shift change last weekend. Although we came up empty last week, we really felt good heading into this week against a great Long Beach State team that was on a 10-game win streak. We talked about protecting home court and having three great days of practice, I think they nailed that, we saw a lot of the things we worked on happen on the court tonight."
UP NEXT
CSUN has a quick turnaround, hosting Cal State Fullerton in a Big West match on Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. The match will stream live on ESPN+.
