SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
California Baptist (6-17, 3-9 Big West) has Big West matches at CSUN and Cal State Bakersfield this week. The Lancers split their last home weekend with a five-set win over Utah Valley on Friday and a straight-sets loss to Sacramento State on Saturday. CBU is 3-9 in Big West action heading into the weekend, placing them 10th in the conference standings with three weeks to go.
Series: Thursday's match is just the fifth meeting all-time between CSUN and California Baptist with the Matadors holding a 3-1 edge in the series. CSUN has won the last three between the two teams after winning 3-1 in Riverside on Oct. 10. The Matadors won at home in both 2024 and 2025 after the Lancers claimed a 3-1 win in a neutral site match in San Jose in the first meeting between the two teams in 2023.
UC Riverside (4-19, 0-12 Big West) travels to Cal State Bakersfield on Friday before visiting the San Fernando Valley on Saturday. The Highlanders have dropped 12 straight (all Big West matches) since finishing the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 3-0 win at Southern Utah on Sept. 19. Last week, Riverside dropped a pair of matches at SRC Arena, falling to Sacramento State (3-0) on Friday and Utah Valley (3-0) on Saturday.
Series: Saturday's match will be the 92nd meeting all-time between the longtime rivals. CSUN holds a 68-23 lead in the series and with its 3-0 win in Riverside on Oct. 9, has won six straight dating back to 2023. The Matadors are 33-6 all-time against the Highlanders in Northridge.
SENTES TAKES OVER AS CSUN DIGS LEADER
With her eighth dig against UC San Diego on Oct. 16, senior libero Paige Sentes became CSUN's all-time digs leader. Sentes, who has missed CSUN's last three matches due to injury, increased her career record total to 1,495 with 23 digs against Cal State Bakersfield on Oct. 23. After opening her senior season in eighth place with 1,196 digs, Sentes has a team-high 299 digs this season to move past Monica McFarland, Amy Hultner, Natalie Allen, Nadine Nickel, Kelley Hanson, Katie Sato, and finally Cindy Ortiz (1,456) who had held the program digs record since 2012. Alexis Cormier (1998-01) holds the sideout scoring era record with 1,194 career digs. With her 10th dig in a 13-dig performance at UC Irvine on Oct. 11, 2025, Sentes became the 12th CSUN player to reach 1,000 digs in her career.Â
After becoming just the eighth player in CSUN history with 2,000 career assists earlier this season, senior Katie Kolar added 53 assists to her career tally in two matches last week. Kolar's career total stands at 2,432 and she now trails sixth-place Kayla Wright by just two assists.Â
BIG WEST POSTSEASON PICTURE
After opening the second half of the Big West season with a win at Cal State Bakersfield, CSUN slipped into sole possession of ninth place in the Big West standings following road losses at Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State. The Matadors sit at 5-7 in the Big West standings but are only one-game behind a trio of teams (Cal State Bakersfield, UC San Diego, Utah Valley) that share sixth place at 6-6. Those three teams trail UC Irvine and Sacramento State which share fourth place at 7-5. At 12-0, Cal Poly has a two-game lead at the top of the conference standings over Long Beach State (10-2) and a four-game lead over UC Santa Barbara (8-4).
CSUN REMAINS BIG WEST BLOCKING LEADERS
Heading into the seventh week of the Big West season, CSUN continues to lead the Big West in blocks per set (2.59) and total team blocks (225.0). Behind senior Iye Okolo who leads the Big West at 1.33 blocks per set (32nd nationally), the Matadors also rank 30th in the NCAA this week in blocks per set and are 26th in the nation in total team blocks. In the Big West rankings, CSUN continues to hold the two of the top five spots in blocks per set as Okolo is the conference leader at 1.33 followed by Tatiana Turgeon, who is fifth at 1.15.
