MORAGA, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (1-7) battled early but could not overcome a fast start from the Saint Mary's Gaels, falling 9-0 in five innings Saturday afternoon at Cottrell Field.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Saint Mary's tacked on four runs in the first inning. A walk and a stolen base opened the inning for the Gaels. Braxton Brown doubled down the left field line to score the first run of the game. Camille Lara reached on an error and two runs scored in the process.
Lastly, Janessa Parras singled to right center to score the fourth run of the inning.
The Matadors were limited to one hit on the day, a second-inning double from center fielder Raegan Jackson. After Jackson moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Isabella Valdez and Perseus Yanez was hit by a pitch, CSUN threatened with two runners on and one out in the second inning. However, Saint Mary's starter Odhi Vasquez worked out of the jam with a strikeout and a groundout to keep the Matadors off the scoreboard.
In the second inning, Saint Mary's opened up the frame with two singles and a double. Alex Cutonilli then hit a sacrifice fly, and Brown singled to center field to plate two more runners for the Gaels.
The Gaels brought three more runs across on three hits and two errors in the bottom half of the fourth.
The game ended after the top of the fifth via run rule.
