Â
ABOUT LAST WEEK
CSUN went 2-2 in the annual Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic last weekend. CSUN won the first game of the tournament, beating BYU, 7-2. Maddie Padilla had a pinch-hit three-run home run to put the game out of reach for the Cougars in the seventh. Isabella Hiner had two RBIs, and Makenzi Padilla and Amber Rivas knocked in runs as well in the victory.
Â
After dropping two in a row to Seattle University and Utah, CSUN finished strong with a win over Oregon State, 4-3. Hiner led the way with two RBIs, while Madison Okano and Amber Rivas each drove in runs as well. Malia Williams earned the win by going five innings, striking out four while only allowing three runs. Kaitlyn Tso earned her second save of the season.
Â
HINER IS OFF TO A ROARING START
Isabella Hiner is off to a fast start in her collegiate career. The freshman is currently second in the Big West in batting average with a .438 clip. She has two multi RBI games in both wins in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. She has only struck out twice in 13 at-bats and she has hit safely in the last three games in a row. On defense, she has been perfect, with 10 putouts in 10 chances.Â
Â
OKANO ALREADY PROVING TO LEAD WITH HER BAT
Madison Okano is a junior transfer from Arizona State. She had an impressive weekend last time out at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic. During the tournament, she batted .500, had a game with multiple home runs including a bomb on the first pitch of the game versus Seattle U on February 20, and another multi-hit game versus Oregon State the following day. She has totaled six RBIs on the season and three doubles to boot. Okano is emerging as a star from the get-go.
Â
TSO MIGHT BE THE ANCHOR IN THE CIRCLE
Freshman Kaitlyn Tso is showing why her number might be called the most by the Matadors' pitching coaches this season. Tso currently has appeared in nine games, started in four, and thrown two complete games with two saves. She struck out a season high five batters against Saint Mary's on February 13, and she's struck out 17 batters total on the season. Have we mentioned that she's only a freshman?
