CSUN Rides Strong Pitching to Complete Sweep at Fullerton

FULLERTON, Calif.---James Voorhies and Lucas Alaniz combined to limit Cal State Fullerton to just five hits as CSUN Baseball completed a weekend sweep with a 4-1 victory on Sunday at Goodwin Field. In his first career start, Voorhies worked five innings with one run allowed while Alaniz shut the door with four shutout frames for his first save of the season.Â
Kyle Panganiban totaled three hits with one RBI, capping a hot weekend at the plate. Andrew Becker and Matthew Pena also each finished with two hits and an RBI apiece.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
In similar fashion to the first two games of the series, the Matadors once again struck first in the opening inning against Titan pitching. Following a leadoff double from Matthew Thomas, CSUN picked up a one-out single from Panganiban followed by a sacrifice fly from Andrew Becker. Moments later, Pena stroked an RBI double to right field, making it a 2-0 game through one half inning.Â
Voorhies, who made the spot start on Sunday, would give up his only run of the ballgame in the bottom of the second inning when the Titans collected a two-out RBI single off the bat of Niko Lombardi. From there though, Voorhies would only allow one base hit over his final three innings of work.Â
Fullerton picked up a base runner with two outs in the third via a walk, but Voorhies retired Nick Miller on a fielder's choice. The freshman then retired the side in order in the fourth inning before pitching around a one-out double in the fifth inning, maintaining a 2-1 lead.Â
Alaniz entered out of the bullpen in the sixth inning and would have to work out of jams in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Titans threatened with two runners on base in the sixth inning before Alaniz struck out Hunter Meyer for the third out. Alaniz stranded the tying run at second base in the bottom of the seventh while he left another base runner in scoring position in the eighth inning as well.Â
The Matador bats would be held at bay for most of the day but they came alive in the top of the ninth. A leadoff walk to Will Linberg and a sacrifice bunt set the table for CSUN in the inning as Evan Saito, a defensive replacement for Thomas early in the game, delivered a clutch RBI single to right center. Following a Colton Boardman walk, Panganiban picked up a big RBI single of his own to extend the lead to 4-1.Â
For the fourth straight inning, Fullerton got its leadoff batter aboard to start the ninth, but Alaniz induced a 4-3 double play off the bat of Lombardi. Alaniz then closed the door by retiring Bren Wilkinson to nail down the save.Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
ACCORDING TO COACH EDDIE CORNEJO
"We pitched exceptionally well this weekend. I'm proud of how our pitching staff bounced back and showed a high level of execution. Voories and Alaniz were able to get out of jams and our defense played well behind them for most part. We are very capable of playing consistently good baseball. Hopefully, this is step one of many good series to come."
