HONOLULU, HI. --- The CSUN softball team (9-19, 5-7 Big West) fell to the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine in both games of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. In game one, CSUN dropped a low scoring game by the score of 3-0 despite a season best performance from pitcher Malia Williams. In game two, CSUN fell 10-3. Hawai'i native Makenzie Kila had two RBIs in the defeat.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME ONE
After a scoreless top half of the first, UH struck first. A leadoff walk put Rhea Furtado at first. Furtado then stole second. The next batter then attempted to bunt, but the ball was caught in the air by the CSUN defense. Trying to throw the runner out at second, the throw sailed into center field and Furtado came around to score for the first run of the game.Â
Â
After a scoreless second inning from both teams, CSUN started to rally in the third. After Vanessa Perez doubled to kick off the inning, Raegan Jackson bunted her over to third. However the Jackson bunt was a one of a kind play. She bunted it right down the first base line. The UH first baseman waited for the ball to go into foul territory, however the ball stayed in fair territory. Jackson was able to reach second on the play, putting two runners in scoring position with nobody out. The next batter, Kila walked, loading the bases. CSUN threatened to score but the next three batters were retired.  Â
Â
In the bottom half of the inning, with one out, UH had two runners reach on back-to-back walks. Williams got out of the jam with a flyout and a swinging strikeout. She struck out three in the first three innings.
Â
In the 4th inning, the 'Bows doubled their lead as a solo shot off the bat of KayaraLeigh Tuiloma made it a 2-0 game.
Â
The game remained 2-0 into the bottom of the sixth when the Rainbow Wahine added to their lead. Two singles, an error and a walk with the bases loaded made it 3-0. UH was geared up to score more with the bases juiced, but Williams struck out the following batter and induced a flyout to center field to end the inning.
Â
With the Matadors down to their final three outs, Kila singled up the middle to leadoff the inning. However, CSUN couldn't bring her home.
Â
GAME TWO
Madison Okano, Perez and Jackson all led off with singles to begin the series finale. Kila brought Okano home on a sacrifice fly to give CSUN its first run of the day and first lead of the series at 1-0. Isabella Hiner then walked to load the bases for the second time in the inning. After the next batter struck out, Kylie Kolkowski came up with two outs and on a full count, was hit by a pitch, doubling CSUN's lead at 2-0. Â
Â
UH wasted no time responding in the bottom of the first. A hit by pitch, a walk, and a single loaded the bases. Jamie McGaughey then hit a ball down the left field line for a ground-rule double that plated two, tying the game at two apiece. Carys Murakami then singled to right field and brought home the go-ahead run to make it 3-2.Â
Freshman Alizae Cole then relieved Kaitlyn Tso due to injury. After the pitching change, Milan Ah-Yat singled to right field, making it 4-2. Two consecutive walks with the bases loaded made it 6-2 before Maycen Gibbs walked and Millie Fidge reached on a fielder's choice giving UH an 8-2 lead after one inning.
Â
The score would remain 8-2 until the bottom of the fourth, when UH added one more runs on two singles and a double.Â
Â
The very next half inning, CSUN got one back. Jackson walked with one out and stole second. Kila brought her home with a single up the middle to make it 9-3 at the end of four and a half.
Â
Flash forward to the bottom of the sixth, UH would add to its lead. Briana Maiosilva singled with a runner on second base to stretch the lead to 10-3.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"[On Mackenzie Kila's day in front of her family] I just want to say that Kila earned that opportunity, it wasn't just given to her. As a staff, we needed a spark. She earned that opportunity and she seized the moment, that's just who Kila is. It was really cool that it happened to be this weekend. She's one of the hardest working people I have ever been around and her performance today didn't surprise us. [On Alizae Cole's performance] She came in the game in a tough situation and threw zeroes on the board. She came into the game sooner then we had imagined. I am really proud of her. She could have easily folded but I am really proud of her fight. Â
