NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball swept the Big West weekly awards on Monday, the league office announced. Sophomore Andrew Becker collected Big West Field Player of the Week honors while junior Jaiden Turner was awarded Big West Pitcher of the Week. The honors are the first in both of their careers.Â
In a week where CSUN went 3-1, Becker slashed .500/.589/.750 at the plate while producing eight hits, one homer, three RBi and six runs scored. On the mound, Turner was dominant, racking up 5.1 shutout innings of work over three relief appearances and earned a victory in the rubber game at UC Irvine on Sunday.Â
Becker entered the week with two hits recorded on the season but managed to double that total in Tuesday's 9-8 comeback victory over Michigan in 12 innings. He would finish 4-for-5 at the plate while homering, driving in two runs and scoring three times. Becker also scored the game-winning run on Vaughn Coleman's walk-off hit. His efforts at the plate helped CSUN overcome an 8-1 deficit in the game.Â
Becker followed up that performance with a strong series against defending Big West regular season champion UC Irvine last weekend. He collected a pair of multi-hit games in the series, both CSUN wins, while he reached base six times over the three games. In the opener, Becker went 2-for-5 with a run scored while he drove in a run in what would be a four-run eighth for an eventual 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Anteaters. Becker went on to go 2-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 9-2 victory.Â
Over the course of the week, Becker improved his season batting average 178 points to .278 overall. Becker is the second consecutive Matador to earn Big West Field Player of the Week after Matthew Thomas earned the award on March 1.Â
Turner continued his outstanding start to his Matador career with three quality relief appearances. On Tuesday against Michigan, Turner turned in a strong 3.2 shutout innings out of the bullpen as he entered the game in the seventh inning with one out and CSUN down a run. Affter CSUN tied the game in the eighth, Turner kept the Wolverines off the scoreboard through the 10th inning, giving CSUN a chance to walk-off in the 12th.Â
Turner went on to appear in two games of the UC Irvine series, recording a pair of outs on Saturday along with a shutout frame on Sunday. He again maintained a tie for CSUN in his relief outing on Sunday, allowing the Matador offense to break out for seven runs in the top of the eighth and prevail 9-2 to take the series over the Anteaters.Â
On the season, Turner has posted a 0.93 ERA with nine strikeouts over 9.2 innings and six relief appearances. Batters have managed just a .194 average against Turner on the year. Turner is the first Matador to earn Big West Pitcher of the Week since Blaine Traxel in 2022.Â
CSUN returns to action on Monday against Pepperdine in a home matchup. First pitch is set for 5 p.m. on ESPN+.Â
