SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The CSUN softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos at Campus Diamond Saturday afternoon. The Matadors lost the first game in close fashion, 4-3 before dropping the last game in five innings, 9-0. Raegan Jackson had two RBIs in game one while Isabella Hiner added an RBI. Malia Williams pitched a complete game in game one.
GAME ONE
In the bottom of the first, the Gauchos struck first. After a walk and a single, Emily Carr doubled to right field and brought both runners home for a quick 2-0 lead. A bloop single with two outs and the lead runner going on contact added another run on the board for UCSB to go ahead 3-0.
It would remain 3-0 until the top of the fourth. In that inning, the Matadors got revenge. After a popout, a single and a fielding error put two runners in scoring position for Jackson. Jackson promptly doubled down the left field line and both runners scored to pull the Matadors to within one.
However, CSUN wouldn't stop there. Isabella Hiner singled to center field and Jackson scored, tying the game at three.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Gauchos took the lead right back. Two singles and a fielder's choice loaded the bases. A groundout to first got the Matadors an out, however, a run scored on the play to make it 4-3.
The Matadors went scoreless the next three innings as the Gaucho pitching staff held them in check to earn the win.
GAME TWO
After a scoreless CSUN top of the first, the Gauchos struck for first blood in the bottom half. Tehya Banks launched a solo home run off the scoreboard in left to make it a 1-0 game.
In the next offensive inning for UCSB, the Gauchos added more runs. Following a single, Ella Myers hit a long fly ball over the left field wall to triple the lead at 3-0.
With two outs and the bases loaded, Carr singled through the right side and the runners went station-to-station, which made it 4-0.
In the third, UCSB added three more. Three singles, a fielding error and a wild pitch accounted for the runs. It was 7-0 after three.
Two singles, a double and a sacrifice fly scored two more runs for the Gauchos before the game ended in five innings via run rule.
