CSUN Falls 1-0 in Series Finale Against Gauchos

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team fell to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos, 1-0 Sunday afternoon at Campus Diamond. Vanessa Perez had the lone hit for the Matadors. In a true pitcher's duel, UCSB's Ainsley Waddell pitched a complete game shutout with six strikeouts, while CSUN's Malia Williams also tossed a complete game and only allowed one earned run with two strikeouts while giving up only three hits.

HOW IT HAPPENED

CSUN threatened early, putting a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning when Vanessa Perez doubled down the right field line and moved to third on a wild pitch. However, Waddell escaped the jam with a strikeout and a flyout to keep the Matadors off the board.

After a scoreless two and a half innings, UCSB struck first. A Dani Rauchser single and a throwing error with a runner in scoring position led to a 1-0 lead by the Gauchos after three.Â

CSUN's defense turned a key double play in the sixth inning to keep the deficit at one, but the Matadors were unable to generate late offense. Amber Rivas drew a walk in the seventh to get the tying run aboard, but Waddell closed the door with a groundout to end the game.

- Williams, despite a great performance, took the hard-luck loss to fall to 5-13 on the year.
