CSUN Wins Home Opener in Five Sets Over UNLV

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - CSUN opened its home schedule with a five-set win on Friday night, defeating UNLV 25-22, 23-25, 24-26, 25-14, 15-9 in its opening match of the Linda Murphy Ridge Invitational at Premier America Credit Union Arena.
With the win, the Matadors improve to 2-4 on the season, while UNLV drops to 0-6.
Senior Hailey Brockway led CSUN with a match-high 19 kills, hitting .333 on 45 swings, while adding 11 digs, three service aces and three block assists. Sophomore Fallyn Blotzer finished with 13 kills (.041) and seven digs, while Audrey Nuckols had 11 kills on .471 hitting with two solo blocks and four block assists. Freshman Annie Gilmore added nine kills on .333 hitting and five digs.
CSUN hit .201 as a team and finished with 13.0 blocks. The Matadors also served a season-high eight aces, including three from Brockway, two from senior Taylor Dunlap, and one each from Blotzer, Tatiana Turgeon and Jan Marie Duhaylungsod.
Katie Kolar handed out 30 assists and had 14 digs, while Duhaylungsod added 18 assists and a career-high 17 digs. Senior libero Paige Sentes finished with 12 digs for CSUN, which posted a 68-55 edge in team digs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After winning the opening set, CSUN dropped two tight frames to fall behind 2-1. The Matadors responded in the fourth set by holding UNLV to a -.061 hitting percentage and using strong serving to pull away for a 25-14 win.
CSUN carried that momentum into the fifth, hitting .588 with 11 kills and just one attack error. Brockway was a difference maker in the deciding set with six kills on seven swings, while Nuckols and Gilmore each added two kills as the Matadors closed out the home opening win.
UNLV was led by Basia Latos, who finished with 17 kills and nine digs.
HEAD COACH AQUILES MONTOYA SAID
"Really proud of our players and how they responded after some really close losses the last couple of weeks. For them to come out put on the performance they did in the fourth set and then the first set, really not letting up and being aggressive, really proud of them.
"The things that were big tonight were our setters played fantastic defense, our opposites were incredible in the front as attackers, and our outsides held it down from the service line. It was a collective team effort and they all stepped up in key moments."
