NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---An 80th minute goal was in the difference in CSUN Women's Soccer 1-0 defeat at the hands of UC San Diego in the 2026 Big West opener on Wednesday at Matador Soccer Field. With the loss, the Matadors had their nine-match unbeaten streak at home snapped. Hayden Mauldin finished with four saves for the Matadors in goal.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN picked up a shot on goal just 39 seconds into the match off the feet of Yasmin Azar, however, the Tritons would take control of the game in the ensuing minutes. Mauldin made three of her four saves in the opening 45 minutes of action as UCSD took eight shots compared to four for CSUN. Late in the first half, Mauldin denied a shot from Natalie Oca while Karize Madero was off target a minute later. CSUN earned its only corner kick of the first half in the waining seconds of the half but could not come away with a shot attempt.

Still scoreless in the second half, UCSD's Alexis Nguyen nearly came away with the game's first goal with a shot that banged off the crossbar. Jordyn Canister and Keilani Claiborne each put a shot on frame for the Matadors in the period, but both strikes were thwarted by goalkeeper Charlotte Wilfert. The Tritons would finally break the scoreless tie in the final minutes of the match. A Triton drive from the left wing set up the scoring play as Oca delivered a well-executed cross to the center of the box where Kennadi Borg headed in the go-ahead goal. Playing with the lead, UCSD controlled the ball and the clock in the closing moments of the match to ensure the victory.

NOTES OF THE GAME

CSUN drops to 2-5-3 overall and 0-1-0 in Big West play while UC San Diego improves to 5-2-2 overall and 1-0-0 in conference.
The Tritons led in shots 16-7 overall while holding a slight 5-4 edge in shots on goal.
UCSD also finished with a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
A total of 16 fouls were called with CSUN whistled for 11 compared to six for UC San Diego.
Azar led CSUN with two shots with one on goal.
The group of Claiborne, Siena Navarra, Sydney Lipkin and Alex Valente played the full 90 minutes.

ACCORDING TO COACH GINA BREWER
"A fair result overall, at the end of the day, they outplayed us in multiple facets. They had 16 shots and we had only seven. Player for player, we needed more effort in the attacking side of the game and the defending side of the game. Frustrating for sure, but we'll look to recover tomorrow and get back to it with a good training session on Friday and have another opportunity on Saturday."
