CSUN Battles to Scoreless Draw with San José State

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer earned its second shutout of the season, playing to a 0-0 draw with San José State on Thursday at Matador Soccer Field. Goalkeeper Hayden Mauldin finished with four saves while the Matadors led in the shot count, 13-9.

HOW IT HAPPENED
CSUN appeared to be the aggressor from the outset of the game, generating two early shots on goal from Jordyn Canister. Her second offering came on a break away, but she could not get the ball past goalkeeper Paige Fry. On the flip side, Mauldin made perhaps the play of the match when she denied a strike from Analise Martins from the left side of the pitch in the 16th minute. The ball appeared to be heading inside the top right corner of the goal before Mauldin made an acrobatic dive to her left to hit the ball out of play. The Spartans went on to earn three straight corner kicks followed by another Mauldin save to keep the game scoreless.

The Matadors would see the ball hit the net in the 33rd minute when Canister set up Lia Peterson for a goal on the door step of the net, but after a video review, the play was deemed an offside.

In the second half, the Matadors gained solid looks from Canister and Keilani Claiborne, but each attempt was off the mark. Yasmin Azar had perhaps the best look of the second period as she was open from the left side of the box. However, Azar's shot was denied by Fry. The final minutes of the match saw CSUN pick up two more corner kick chances, but neither led to shot attempts. San José State gained a late chance from Kiara Anima in the final minute as her shot blocked by the CSUN defense.

NOTES OF THE GAME

CSUN's overall record stands at 1-4-1 while San José State is 0-3-2.
While the Matadors finished with a 13-9 edge in shots, each side had four shots on goal each.
CSUN finished with a 12-3 advantage in corner kicks.
Canister totaled a team-high five shots with three on frame.
The group of Harper Curnutt, Siena Navarra, Sydney Lipkin, Alex Valente and Claiborne played the full 90 minutes each.
The Matadors are now unbeaten at home over their last eight matches, dating back to last season.

"We're happy that we didn't concede any goals. We obviously wanted to score that goal but weren't able to put it in the back of the net. We created a lot of scoring opportunities, which we're excited about. Moving forward, we just have to be a little more clinical and have a little better technical executions in those moments to actually get the ball in the back of the net. Still, an improved performance overall."
