CSUN Battles Back Twice in 2-2 Draw with UNLV

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Women's Soccer battled back from two different second-half deficits as the Matadors played to a 2-2 draw with UNLV on Sunday at Matador Soccer Field. Jordyn Canister and Siena Navarra each hit equalizers in the contest while Hayden Mauldin picked up two saves.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The two sides would have to contend with rain and slick field conditions throughout Sunday's matchup. The Rebels threatened the Matador defense in the early going, generating three shots including a shot on frame from Felicity Garcia. Canister would take the Matadors' first shot of the match in the 21st minute, an attempt that was blocked by the defense. The wet conditions nearly led to a CSUN goal when Yasmin Azar took a shot from nearly 30 yards, leading to a stop from Brooke Kramer but the ball was mishandled momentarily before the UNLV goalkeeper made the recovery. The two sides had four shots each in a scoreless first 45 minutes of action.

The scoring would pick up in a back-and-forth second half. UNLV broke the scoreless tie in the 60th minute after Kamri Yergensen found Kaitlin Taylor in the right corner. Taylor would deliver a shot over the outstretched hands of Mauldin and inside the far post for a 1-0 UNLV lead. However, that lead was short-lived, as the Matadors answered less than a minute later in the 61st minute. Off a throw in from Michelle Monroy, Canister scored from the right corner on a similar shot to Taylor's moments before as the Matador forward hit the net on a sweeping shot that sailed inside the left post.

UNLV responded in the 73rd minute on a well-executed play where the Rebels' defense sent a long pass up the left sideline. Taylor corralled the ball then set up Tatum Jackson in front of the net for a 2-1 advantage. CSUN would look for the equalizer in the ensuing minutes, eventually finding a scoring chance off a corner kick in the 81st minute. Yasmin Azar sent the ball inside a crowd in front of the goal where Navarra cleaned up the play with a left-footed tapper to tie the game once more at 2-2. The Matadors survived a late shot from Summer Pyles in the final moments before the match finished as a draw.

NOTES OF THE GAME

With the draw, both CSUN and UNLV hold 1-4-2 overall records.
The Matadors finished with a 13-12 edge in shots while the Rebels led 4-3 in shots on goal.
Each side totaled five corner kicks.
In fouls, UNLV was whistled for 12 compared to CSUN with 11. The Matadors' Ariana Lopez-Angel and the Rebels' Macee McKenna saw yellow cards.
Canister's goal was her second of the season while Navarra's goal was her first.
Azar now has a team-high two assists this season.
Harper Curnutt, Sydney Lipkin and Alex Valente each played a full 90 minutes for CSUN.

"First of all, I'm proud of the resilience and the fight of the team to come back twice. I think that showed a lot about us. Obviously, we put ourselves in tough situations going down and conceding those goals. We still have to clean up a few areas and be a little more disciplined in a few situations. Overall, it was a very competitive game. Both teams showed a lot of physicality, there were a lot of challenges in the air with first and second balls. With the rain, the slick surface didn't make it any easier to play. A hard-fought, competitive game, a 2-2 draw was probably a fair result, but we feel we want more and we need to get better to put together that 90-minute performance."

The Matadors hit the road next week for their final non-conference matches. CSUN first takes on Utah Tech on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 6 p.m. before meeting Southern Utah on Sept. 13 at noon.
