Northridge Drops 64-53 Decision at UC Riverside

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Northridge women's basketball team (1-15, 1-3 Big West) lost 64-53 to UC Riverside Thursday night at the Student Rec Center. After trailing by 23 at halftime, CSUN mounted a furious comeback in the second half, outscoring UCR, 30-18, and holding the Highlanders to just two field goals in the final 12 minutes of the game.

CSUN came out much more focused in the second half, especially on the defensive end. The Matadors held the Highlanders to seven points over the final 12 minutes of the game and a 30.4 percent (7-of-23) from the field.

However, the first half proved too steep of a hole for CSUN. The Matadors trailed 46-23 at the break, turning the ball over 12 times and shooting 32 percent from the field.

Individually, Jasmine Erving posted her second-straight double-double and the 11th of her career by finishing with a season-high 24 points and 13 rebounds. She also had two blocked shots in the game to tie Bridgette Ealy for seventh in school history with 81 career rejections.

Bridgette Conejo was the second Matador to score in double-figures, finishing with 12 points. She was 5-of-9 from the field and also hit two 3-pointers in the contest. Conejo also had eight rebounds, one off her season high, and tied a career high with five assists.

Analee Viena-Lota had six points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals for Northridge. She is now just nine rebounds shy of tying Tracy Burns with 486 career rebounds for 10th in school history. Also for the Matadors, Violet Alama came off the bench to score nine points and grab six rebounds.
As a team, CSUN shot 34 percent (18-of-53) for the game compared to 39.7 percent (23-of-58) for UC Riverside. The Matadors also controlled the glass all game, outrebounding the Highlanders, 42-30, their biggest rebounding advantage of the season.

CSUN out-scored UCR, 22-16, in the paint. The Matador bench also finished with 33 points to the Highlanders' 15. However, UC Riverside scored 18 points off 17 Northridge turnovers with 16 of those points coming in the first half. Brittany Waddell finished with 18 points while Alyssa Morris added 14 for UCR.

Northridge remains on the road for its next game, a meeting with Cal State Fullerton. The Matadors and Titans will square off on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 3 p.m. from Titan Gym.
