CSUN looked to be the agressor from the start of the match when Edwin Rivas had a blistering shot miss just to the left of the goal within the first minute of play. Rivas struck a shot again in the 17th minute that rebounded off the goalkeeper to a teammate but the resulting goal was waved off for the player being offside.
Goalkeeper Adam Hobbs made a pair of terrific saves for the Matadors in the first half, doing his part to keep the match scoreless. He saved a well-timed header by Mason McCann from a corner kick and came off his line to slide and kick the ball clear after Mez took a shot in the 30th minute.
As the first half drew to a close the Matadors had a final chance to take the lead when a Sacramento State defender was whistled for a handball in the box. Trevor Morley stepped to the penalty spot for CSUN, but goalkeeper James Del Curto guessed correctly and made a diving save on the ground at his right post to keep the match tied.
Marino Peixoto almost put the Matadors ahead just after the start of the second half. His shot from a free kick in the 47th minute was saved, however, and Sagi Lev-Ari's follow-up shot shortly after was blocked away by a defender.
Just over three minutes later, Mez put the Hornets ahead with his sixth goal of the season. Elias Rieland dribbled up the right side of the field and sent a cross into the box that was headed by Mez into the far corner.
The Matadors began to recover from the goal and were sending players forward looking to tie the score once more, the another shift in momentum occured in the 79th minute. CSUN was forced to play the final 11 minutes of the match down a man after Morley was sent off following his second yellow card. Although the Matadors continued to attack, the Hornets remained steady to preserve the shutout.
CSUN will remain home for its next match when the team takes on the UC Davis Aggies on Saturday night. The match between the Matadors and Aggies at Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
