Early Goal Pushes Fullerton Past CSUN 1-0
10/23/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Titans controlled the pace of play in the first half, limiting the Matadors to two shots. Through the first 15 minutes of the match, however, CSUN's defense repeatedly came through to break up attacks and send the ball back upfield. A couple of shots for the Titans missed high of the target or were blocked altogether due to the consistent pressure from the Matadors.
In the 19th minute the breakthrough came for Cal State Fullerton. As the Matadors tried to clear their lines, the Titans countered with a well-placed ball up top for Gonzalez.
His initial shot was saved by Hobbs at point-blank distance inside the penalty area, but the ball ended up at the feet of Fenelus. The Titan forward had nobody between him and the open goal and calmly put his shot away to give Cal State Fullerton a 1-0 advantage.
After the half-hour mark the field began to open up for the Matadors offensively, leading to a corner kick for CSUN in the 33rd minute. Nicolas Camacho sent in a searching ball toward the back post that found the head of Trevor Morley, but his redirection went right to goalkeeper Jeff Salt for the save. Mynor Giron also had a shot on goal from distance but his bouncing shot was also kept out of the net by Salt before halftime.
In the second half the CSUN offense rebounded to the tune of eight shots but only two were put on goal. Camacho and David Turcios sent shots on frame that were denied, while Marino Peixoto nearly had a goal from 20 yards out from a free kick that missed inches wide.
In total, the Matadors led the second half in shots, shots on goal and corner kicks, but were unable to find an equalizer in the match. As a result, CSUN now sits in fourth place in the Big West South Division with four matches to play.
CSUN will remain on the road for its next match, Saturday, Oct. 25, at No. 3 UC Irvine. The Anteaters were defeated on Wednesday night by UC Riverside but are currently leading the division. CSUN and UCI will kick off at Anteater Stadium in Irvine, Calif. at 7 p.m.
