CSUN Edged By Cal Poly 2-1 in Overtime
10/5/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Matadors had the majority of the chances throughout the match, registering seven shots and forcing Cal Poly goalkeeper Wade Hamilton to make six saves. In the 27th minute, Nicolas Camacho had his shot saved on the doorstop by Hamilton and Peixoto's follow-up chance missed high.
CSUN continued to ask the questions of Hamilton and nearly took the lead after an attacking sequence in the 36th minute. Peixoto started things off by ringing the post and a minute later he and Sagi Lev-Ari saw their shots stopped by Hamilton.
At haltime, the Matadors led 10-4 in shots and had three shots on goal to Cal Poly's one. It was the Mustangs who came out stronger to start the second half and CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs was forced to make a save just 19 seconds into the period.
Following a shot on goal by CSUN defender Trevor Morley, the Mustangs broke the pressure and were able to tally the first goal of the match. Kaba Alkebulan received a pass from John Chronopoulos on the right side and rounded Hobbs before shooting into the left corner of the goal in the 56th minute.
It took another half-hour for the Matadors to find the equalizer, but it came for the visitors just two and a half minutes from time. Edwin Rivas started the play at the left side of the penalty area and slotted a pass to Peixoto, who placed a shot over the goalkeeper from the top of the box for his first career strike.
Not content to wait out the final two minutes, Lev-Ari was inches from winning the match for CSUN when he hit the post 22 seconds after Peixoto's goal. The ball stayed out, however, and the contest went to an extra period.
On their first opportunity in overtime, the Mustangs got the game-winning goal in the 92nd minute. Alkebulan scored his second of the match in transition after a nice pass upfield from Matt LaGrassa.
The Matadors will return home for their next match looking for crucial points in the Big West Conference season. CSUN will host Sacramento State on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. at Matador Soccer Field.
