
Elizabeth Nelson Finishes Third at Big West Cross Country Championship

RIVERSIDE, Calif. -Â Paced by the third-place finish of junior Elizabeth Nelson, the CSUN women's cross country team placed sixth while the men were eighth Saturday at the Big West Cross Country Championships at UC Riverside.
The sixth-place team finish for the Matador women, who tallied 150 points, is their best since finishing sixth in 2002. Nelson's third-place individual showing matches the best-ever for a CSUN women's runner as Lilyana Morejon was also third in 2009 and Liz Camy took third at the 2005 conference championship.
Nelson completed the 6k UCR Ag/Ops Course in a time of  20:27.2 to finish behind only Raquel Hefflin of UC Riverside (20:12.6) and Christine Hoffman of UC Davis (20:22.7). Nelson's time is the best-ever by a Matador on the course as Morejon held the CSUN record at 20:36.3 while Camy's time was 21:15.7.
Jocelyne Ferrufino was CSUN's next finisher as she placed 26th in 21:52.8 while the Matadors were also represented by Megan Magdaleno (33rd, 22:15.7), Rachael Duriez (44th, 22:47.9), Kimberly Newton (54th, 23:25.6), Kristen Tapia (65th, 24:24.8) and Lupita Fausto (67th, 24:59.3).
UC Davis claimed the women's team championship with 36 points, finishing ahead of Cal Poly (66), UC Santa Barbara (86), UC Riverside (95), Cal State Fullerton (149), Long Beach State (177) and UC Irvine (194). With 150 team points, CSUN ran an average time of 22:09.84.
In the men's 8k championship race, the Matadors finished eighth with 218 points. UC Santa Barbara won with 21 points followed by Cal Poly (49), UC Riverside (95), Long Beach State (114), Cal State Fullerton (129), UC Davis (144), UC Irvine (197) and CSUN.
Individually, Angel Alcantar had the Matadors' top finish as he was 32nd in a time of 25:19.7. Geofry Sarco finished 41st in 25:32.4, Jackson Higgins was 57th in 26:16.5, Charlie Nettle was 60th in 26:50.9, Manuel Vargas was 62nd in 26:59.6, Luis Chavez was 63rd in 27:27.5 and Dylan Haerle was 66th in 28:27.8.
CSUN's men's squad ran an average time of 26:11.82.
