KA'ANAPALI, Maui - The CSUN men's golf team opened their final fall tournament Friday carding a first round 287 but are 13th at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic at Ka'anapali G.C.
After a 12th-place finish at their own Bill Cullum Invitational two weeks ago, the Matadors looked to close the fall on a high note before heading into the spring portion of the 2014-15 schedule.
According the CSUN head coach Jim Bracken, the Matadors gave away too many shots on Friday but can make up for that with a solid second round on Saturday.
"We hit the ball well today we just didn't make any putts," said Bracken. "We're the only team in the field that didn't have a single guy under par so that's disappointing. The conditions were perfect today we just didn't get it done, but the guys and I expect a better round tomorrow."
Michael O'Connor and Tim Snyder each opened with an even-par round of 71 on Friday and are in a tie for 36th. Snyder posted a pair of birdies and a pair of bogeys while playing par golf the rest of the opening round. O'Connor did the same with his two birdies coming on the back nine.
Joey Varnam is a shot back at one-over 72 and is tied for 48th while Steven Molumby is tied for 58th at two-over 73. Dodge Ward is tied for 64th after an opening round four-over 75.
Oregon, the second-ranked team in the country, blistered the Ka'anapali course as Brandon McIver fired a nine-under 62 to lead the Ducks (254) who had all five players score 66 or better.
The second of three rounds gets underway Saturday morning.
