CSUN Posts 65-54 Victory at San Diego State

The Matadors won a physical battle with the Aztecs in the second game of their roadtrip. Both teams had 22 fouls and were an identical 19-of-23 from the free throw line. In all, the teams combined to shoot 38-of-119 (31.9 percent) from the field.
CSUN led for the majority of the contest Saturday, overcoming an early four-point deficit. The Matadors' defense held SDSU to 7-of-27 shooting (25.9 percent) from the field in the opening 20 minutes. CSUN was 11-of-35 from the field (31.4 percent) and carried a 30-27 lead into halftime.
In the second half, Sharpe scored the first five points and forced a quick SDSU timeout. The Aztecs would get no closer than seven the rest of the way while CSUN's lead would get to as big as 13 with about four minutes to play.
Sharpe finished 6-of-13 from the field and knocked down both of her 3-point attempts. She added six rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes of action.
In a quasi-homecoming, Guay finished 6-of-17 from the field and had six rebounds. The San Diego, Calif., native had a team-high four assists and and also had two steals in 37 minutes of work.
Caroline Gilling came off the bench to score eight points on a career-high four field goals. Randi Friess had a season-high five points and led the Matadors with seven rebounds.
The Matadors scored 19 points off 22 Aztec turnovers and CSUN's 15 offensive rebounds resulted in 13 second-chance points.
Erimma Amarikwa had 14 points for San Diego State in defeat. Sunday was the first meeting between the schools since a 2003 CSUN victory.
"Anytime you can win on the road, it is a good thing. It was not the prettiest game from an offensive standpoint, but after getting off to a slow start, I thought defensively we did a better job at taking away some things," CSUN head coach Jason Flowers said.
The Matadors are off now for the Holidays and return to action with another challenging roadtrip. CSUN heads to Philadelphia to compete in the Hawk Classic on the campus of Saint Joseph's University.
On Dec. 28, CSUN will face Florida Gulf Coast and the next day square off with either Quinnipiac or the host Hawks.
