Saint Joseph's Clips CSUN at Hawk Classic

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (9-4) lost 61-54 to Saint Joseph's University Monday in the Consolation Game of the 2014 Hawk Classic at Hagan Arena. Ashlee Guay led the Matadors with 12 points, but the Matadors could not slow down the Hawks in the second half in dropping their second-straight game.
In their second game in the city of Brotherly Love in as many days, turnovers continued to plague CSUN. After finishing with 20 turnovers against Florida Gulf Coast on Sunday, CSUN coughed it up 20 more times Monday. The miscues resulted in 25 points for Saint Joseph's.
CSUN took a brief five-point lead moments into the second half but could not build upon it. Saint Joseph's, the host school for the tournament, took control down the stretch behind timely 3-point shooting and by taking advantage of CSUN errors.
Saint Joseph's came out strong in the second half and took a 44-37 lead with 11:37 left in the second half. Emily Cole then responded with a pair of 3-pointers to force a Hawk timeout at 10:39.
With the score 47-43 in favor of Saint Joe's with 7:58 left in the second half, the Hawks scored four straight points to take an eight-point lead. CSUN got to the free throw line to close the gap to 51-48 and then trailed 53-48 with 3:54 left in the contest.
Saint Joseph's Kathleen Fitzpatrick hit a 3-pointer to stretch the lead to eight before Guay scored a lay-up. The Hawks made their free throws down the stretch to seal the victory.
The teams traded baskets early with neither team leading by more than four through the opening minutes of the contest. Cinnamon Lister connected on a pair of 3-pointers in the half and Caroline Gilling and Katelin King each connected on a trey. Camille Mahlknecht made a hook shot with time winding down to give the Matadors a 31-29 lead at halftime.
Jasmine Johnson, starting for the second time in as many days, had a strong first half for the Matadors. She finished with nine points and six rebounds in 12 minutes in the opening frame. She finished the game with a season-high nine points and eight rebounds.
Guay was the only Matador to finish in double figures Monday, finishing 5-of-12 from the field and knocking down one 3-pointers. She added eight assists, eight rebounds and a steal in 30 minutes of action. She is now tied for 10th in Big West Conference History with 256 career steals. She also earned all-tournament team honors after averaging 17 points in the two CSUN losses.
Cinnamon Lister had eight points on two 3-pointers while both Emily Cole and Gilling each had two connections from downtown.
The Matadors shot just 31.7 percent (20-of-63) from the field and 29.6 percent (8-of-27) from 3-point range. Saint Joseph's finished at 34.5 percent from the field (19-of-55) and 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from beyond the arc.
CSUN out-rebounded the Hawks 44-34 and had 18 offensive rebounds but scored 12 second-chance points to 13 for the Hawks. The game featured 11 ties and eight lead changes.
The Matadors will look to rebound with yet another road game to ring in 2015, traveling to Seattle to face the Seattle University Redhawks on January 3. Tip off is slated for 2 p.m.
