CSUN Falls to No. 8 New Mexico 1-0 Despite Late Rally
9/13/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
New Mexico was the stronger team through the first half, leading the match in shots (7-1) and corner kicks (6-1) going into the break. The Lobos earned three corner kicks in the first 11 minutes of play and forced CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs to make his first save of the match in the 16th minute.
Three minutes later, however, New Mexico was able to strike for the only goal of the match. As the Matadors attempted to clear a loose ball out of the box it rolled directly to Chris Wehan, who hit a one-timer that rose into the top right corner of the goal from 15 yards out.
The momentum drastically changed at the start of the second half, as the Matadors went on the offensive and forced New Mexico to cling to the lead over the final 45 minutes. CSUN's first shot on goal came from Edwin Rivas, who headed a corner from Nicolas Camacho but had his attempt saved in the 51st minute.
Just over four minutes later a golden opportunity arose for the Matadors when a cross was whipped in from the right side, but Sagi Lev-Ari got just under the ball with his head and popped it over the goal. CSUN's best chance to tie the score came with under 10 minutes to play after a pair of collisions in the box.
Carlos Gonzalez appeared to be taken down by the goalkeeper near the six-yard box as neither could secure the ball. As the play continued, Turcios gained possession inside the box but was upended after a defender stepped across his body to impede his progress. No whistle blew and New Mexico eventually cleared the danger after a brief injury timeout so Turcios could receive attention.
The Matadors continued to send waves of players forward in attack until the end of the match but were unsuccessful in finding the net.
The team will have little time to think about the match though as CSUN has one day off before hosting Bradley on Sunday afternoon. Kickoff between the Matadors and Braves is scheduled for 4 p.m. and all youth ages 17 and under in attendance will receive free admission.
