Matadors, Mavericks Play to Scoreless Draw
9/19/2014 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer
The Matadors controlled the first half of play, not allowing the Mavericks to record a shot or win a corner kick until the 51st minute. In the 18th minute, CSUN defender Patrick Hickman had a prime opportunity to score but his shot from inside the box was cleared off the goal line by a UNO defender.
Just before the halftime whistle, Yarden Azulay fired a shot from 10 yards away that was saved on the ground by goalkeeper Josh Christensen. Christensen made another save, this time on Nicolas Camacho's try, in the 47th minute to keep the match level at the start of the second half.
Marino Peixoto became the fourth Matador to have his shot denied when Christensen made another save in the 55th minute. The match began to even out after that point and the momentum swung in Omaha's favor when CSUN forward Edwin Rivas was sent off with a red card in the 70th minute.
Although the Mavericks went on the offensive from that point, CSUN goalkeeper Adam Hobbs was never called upon to make a save. In the 88th minute, forward Carlos Gonzalez nearly won the game for the Matadors but his header went over the bar.
Trevor Morley had a shot miss wide in the first overtime and both Kevin Martinez and Sagi Lev-Ari missed the target in the second overtime as the match finished 0-0.
CSUN will return home for its next match against the Bakersfield Roadrunners on Thursday, Sept. 25. Kickoff at Matador Soccer Field is scheduled for 7 p.m.
