FRESNO, Calif. - The CSUN men's golf team put together its finest two rounds of the 2014 season Monday as the Matadors, behind Steven Molumby, are tied for fourth through 36 holes at the Nick Watney Invitational at Sunnyside G.C.
CSUN fired team rounds 287-288 on Monday, its two low rounds of the 2014 season thus far, and are tied for fourth in the 10-team field at one-under 575. The Matadors sit tied with both Cal Poly and Santa Clara, four strokes behind third-place UC Irvine and and seven behind second-place Fresno State.
Pacific is a staggering 25-under par as a team and is the runaway team leader after 36 holes.
Molumby, who finished a disappointing 69th at the season-opening Southwestern Intercollegiate before finishing a CSUN-best 35th at the Saint Mary's Invitational two weeks ago, is alone in second place at seven-under 137 after carding rounds of 70-67. Both rounds are Matador lows for 18 holes this season and the senior from Stavanger, Norway heads into the final round two shots behind Pacific's Byron Meth (70-65--135).
"Steven played solid today, he was striking the ball really well, said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "If he missed the green he recovered really well. He bogeyed two of his last three holes or he could be tied for the lead."
Fellow senior Michael O'Connor is also looking for his first top-20 finish of the season as he is currently tied for 11th at one-under 143. O'Connor opened with a one-under 71 before posting an even-par 72 in the afternoon round.
Junior Tim Snyder, who has CSUN's only top-20 finish this season, fired an opening round three-under 69 before a second round three-over 75 dropped him into a tie for 20th at even-par 144.
Also for the Matadors, Dodge Ward is tied for 53rd at nine-over 153 after rounds of 77-76. Joey Varnam is tied for 55th at 10-over 154 after rounds of 80-74 and Aden Louez is 58th at 16-over 160 following rounds of 81-79 competing as an individual.
"We're tied for fourth but its definitely doable seeing us move up the leaderboard tomorrow," added Bracken. "This team has talent which has made the first couple of tournaments frustrating. This is more of what I expect from this team and they expect it too."
Teams tee off the final round Tuesday morning.
