FRESNO, Calif. - A top-five finish for senior Steven Molumby and a top-six finish for CSUN highlighted the final day of the Nick Watney Invitational Tuesday at Sunnyside G.C.
Molumby, a senior from Stavanger, Norway, posted his best finish as a Matador as he tied for third at seven-under 209. Molumby was second after two rounds on Monday before firing an even-par 72 on Tuesday to finish three shots off the lead.
"Steven was consistent today although he was frustrated he could not get any putts to drop," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "This was certainly the best he's played in his three-plus years and hopefully he can build on this."
Four other Matadors made the top-40 in the 60-player field led by junior Tim Snyder who narrowly missed his second top-20 finish of the young season. Snyder, who was tied for 20th through 36 holes, posted a final round three-over 75 to slip into a tie for 26th at three-over 219.
Michael O'Connor, who opened the day tied for 11th, struggled to a final round of six-over 78 and dropped into a tie for 34th at five-over 221. Dodge Ward had CSUN's low round of the day as the senior fired a two-under 70 to move up into a tie for 38th at seven-over 223.
Joey Varnam also had a nice final round as he finished at one-under 71 to close with rounds of 74-71 and ultimately finish in a tie for 49th at nine-over 225. Aden Louez played as an individual in his 2014-15 debut and was 58th at 19-over 235 with rounds of 81-79-75.
"We shot even par today so I'm pleased with how we played although really didn't get anything going," added Bracken. "We wound up under par as a team for the tournament so it was definitely a step in the right direction. We've got a lot of positives to build on and we hope to have a good finish at our tournament in three weeks."
