Turnovers, Cold Shooting Sink CSUN at Cal Poly

Katelin King hit a 3-pointer at 16:46 of the second half to put CSUN up 34-32. Ashlee Guay and Camille Mahlknecht each added baskets during the stretch to give CSUN a four-point lead.Â
From there, Cal Poly rolled off a 15-0 run to take control of the game and 49-38 with 11:24 left in the second half. The Matadors would get no closer than four points the rest of the way.Â
Turnovers haunted CSUN all game. In the first half, the Matadors committed 12 turnovers that resulted in 17 points for Cal Poly. Things did not improve in the second half for CSUN, who committed another seven miscues and Cal Poly turned that into another 11 points.
In all, CSUN shot just 20-of-59 (33.9 percent) from the field and 9-of-29 (31 percent) from 3-point range. The Big West's top free throw shooting team, CSUN did itself no favors by finishing 3-of-7 (42.9 percent) from the charity stripe.
CSUN started slowly, falling behind 17-7 early in the contest as the Mustangs went on a 15-3 run early in the contest. The Matadors responded behind the shooting of Janae Sharpe, who scored five-straight points to pull CSUN within 17-12.
The Mustangs were not fazed and unleashed another 12-3 run to take a 29-15 lead after a jumper from Ariana Elegado. CSUN fought back and trailed 30-24 at halftime after shooting just 9-of-30 from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
Lister finished with four 3-pointers to increase her CSUN career total to 127, the fourth-most in program history. She added four rebounds and a steal in 29 minutes.Â
Guay posted 11 points, six rebounds, eight assists and two steals in 36 minutes of work. The pair of steals gives her 265 for her career, tying for her the eighth-most in Big West Conference history.
Sharpe was third the Matador to score in double-figures by finishing with 11 points. She tied a season high with three 3-pointers and added two assists, two rebounds and two steals in 33 minutes of work.Â
Mahlknecht came off the bench to finish with a game-high 13 rebounds, her the 28th double-figure rebounding game of her career. She added six points, a block and two steals in 23 minutes of work.
Elegado led the Mustangs with a game-high 22 points. Kristen Ale added 10 in the victory for Cal Poly, which snapped a three-game losing streak to CSUN.Â
The Matadors remain on the road for their next two contests, traveling to UC Irvine (Jan. 22, 7 p.m.) and to Long Beach State (Jan. 24, 4 p.m.).Â
