Kammer, Sanchez Power No. 11 CSUN to Sweep of Cal Baptist Tourney

The No. 11 CSUN Matadors cruised to a pair of wins at the Cal Baptist Tournament on Saturday, defeating both the host Lancers and Azusa Pacific to even the team's record at 3-3.

Katie Kammer scored twice and six other Matadors had a goal as No. 11 CSUN (2-3) limited the Cal Baptist Lancers (1-6) in an 8-2 victory on Saturday morning at the CBU Tournament. The Matadors raced out to a 5-0 lead by halftime and added insurance in the second half to seal the win.
In a defensive battle at the Lancer Aquatics Center, the Matadors took a 1-0 lead after the first quarter. CSUN went on to pull away from the Lancers with six goals over the next 16 minutes. Holding a 7-1 lead going into the final quarter, Natalie Averell took over in goal and both sides managed to score once before the end of the match.
In addition to Kammer's pair of goals, the Matadors saw offensive production from Katelyn Fairchild, Marisa Young, MacKenzy Fowler, Shannon Hovanesian, Paula Abellan Garcia and Amy Yule. Averell had a pair of saves in goal while starter Kiernan Davis stopped six attempts in three quarters.

In Saturday's second match, freshman Madeline Sanchez sparked the CSUN offense with six goals against Azusa Pacific (2-4) as the Matadors improved to 3-3 overall with a 14-8 win. Marisa Young added three goals and MacKenzy Fowler had three assists to help CSUN sweep the CBU Tournament.
CSUN jumped out to an early lead, scoring five goals in the opening quarter. Four more tallies before the half gave the Matadors more than enough cushion at 9-3.
McKenzie Pollei had two goals while Kelcy Barott, Shannon Hovanesian and Paula Abellan Garcia had one each. The Matadors recorded 12 steals as a team as well and will ride a two-match winning streak heading into Sunday's home opener against Hartwick.
Sunday's match against the Hawks at Matador Pool is scheduled for 10 a.m.
