Carlos Gonzalez Scores Game-Winning Goal
En Español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- Senior Carlos Gonzalez scored at the stroke of 67 minutes to lift the visiting CSUN men's soccer team (6-6-2, 2-3-1 Big West) to a 1-0 victory at UC Riverside Saturday night at Riverside Soccer Stadium. Gonzalez tallied his team-leading fifth goal of the year on assists from Juan Fernando Samayoa and Stuart Close while senior goalkeeper Adam Hobbs made four saves to preserve the clean sheet for the Matadors.Â
"We played a hard-fought game against a quality opponent in UC Riverside. To get three points on the road in this series is a great achievement," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "This win will help get us ready for a resilient and technical Cal State Fullerton side on Wednesday."Â
CSUN is now 5-0-1 in its last six matches away from Matador Soccer Field. The Matadors' last road loss came at Nebraska-Omaha (4-1) on September 6 and since then CSUN has posted victories at Santa Clara, Saint Mary's, San Diego, Sacramento State and UC Riverside.Â
Saturday was another great showing from the CSUN defense. The Matadors withstood 15 shots from UC Riverside with five attempts coming on frame. Hobbs made two saves in each half and the CSUN team was credited with a save in the 19th minute. CSUN also got some help from the woodwork in the 84th minute when a UCR header rang off the crossbar.
Hobbs now has 61 saves and an .803 save percentage to go with four shutouts and six victories on the season. He now has 13 shutouts in his CSUN career.Â
Offensively, CSUN finished with four shots in the contest but ultimately provided the winner to separate the sides. Close switched the ball to Samayoa, who then connected with Gonzalez and the senior slotted home his third game-winning goal of the season. Both Samayoa and Close picked up their first assists of the season and the helper was also the first of Close's career.Â
The win was CSUN's 29th on the road or at a neutral-site since the start of the 2010 season. Jumoke Hutton saw the yellow card in the 50th minute of action.Â
CSUN remains on the road for its next contest, traveling to Cal State Fullerton on Wednesday, Sept 21 for a 7 p.m. match at Titan Stadium.Â
