Seniors Turcios, Morley Score in Second-Half Comeback
FULLERTON, Calif. --- Seniors David Turcios and Trevor Morley scored second-half goals to lift the visiting CSUN men's soccer team (7-6-2, 3-3-1 Big West) to a 2-1 victory over Cal State Fullerton Wednesday night in a Big West Conference match at Titan Stadium. Fellow senior Adam Hobbs made five saves in net for the Matadors, who improved to 6-0-1 over their last seven road matches.
The Matadors have made themselves quite at home when playing on the road this season. CSUN has not lost as the visiting side since Sept. 4 and has outscored its opponents 13-4 in the streak. Trailing 1-0 after a goal in the 26th minute, CSUN got goals in the 54th and 63rd minutes to score the road victory.
"When we focus on one game at a time, we are tough. We beat a tough Fullerton team at their place and are excited about the win," CSUN head coach Terry Davila said. "Our seniors really led us tonight. Victor Vasquez played a great second half, helping to shut down the right side of their attack. Tanner Snedigar was outstanding and although his and Victor's performances aren't seen in the box score, they led the way emotionally, physically, technically and tactically. We couldn't have done it without our seniors."
Off a turnover, Chester Castellaw broke in on the Titan goal with Carlos Gonzalez on his right and Turcios streaking down his left. At the top of the 18, Castellaw was tackled off the ball by a Titan, allowing Gonzalez to pounce on the loose ball and slot it to Turcios. The senior midfielder finished high into the netting for his career-high fourth goal of the season. Gonzalez picked up his first assist of the season.
About eight minutes later, Shane Steffes made a charging run up the right side of the pitch, maneuvering past several defenders as he entered the penalty area. A final tackle sent him spiraling to the ground and the referee pointed to the penalty spot.
That set up Morley to bury his third penalty and second game-winning goal of the season. They are the first three goals of Morley's CSUN career and the Matadors are 4-4 in chances in 2015.
In net, Hobbs made several tough saves off free kicks and finished with five stops over the 90 minutes. He had four saves in the second half and after one free kick produced a rebound, Hobbs' defensive teammates cleared the ball easily from the dangerous area. The win is the 28th of Hobbs' CSUN career, moving him into a tie with Radames Lafaurie and Christian Perez for the third-most in school history.
The first half saw CSUN total two shots. Dean Wright combined nicely with Gonzalez early in the contest, but the senior forward's attempt was snuffed out by a charging Titan goalkeeper. Turcios had the other shot of the half, firing an attempt off a corner kick high of the crossbar.
Cal State Fullerton scored off a free kick in the 26th minute when Edgar Rodriguez cleaned up a corner kick at the far post.
The second half saw the action and intensity ramp up. The teams combined for 18 shots and 16 fouls over the final 45 minutes. Juan Fernando Samayoa and Hobbs both saw the yellow card and Cal State Fullerton's Michael Lopez earned his second after the conclusion of the match to receive a red card.
Cal State Fullerton had seven corner kicks in the match to three for CSUN. Turcios fired off a match-high six shots, putting four on goal. David Elias made six saves in defeat for the Titans.
With the victory, CSUN has now won 17-straight matches when scoring at least two goals, a streak that dates back to the 2013 season.
The win pushes CSUN to 10 points, three behind Cal State Fullerton for the Big West South Division lead and three points ahead of third-place UC Irvine. In the Big West Tournament, the second-place finisher in each division hosts an opening-round match. UC Riverside is also still very much alive at 1-5 and three points but with three matches left.
The Matadors and Anteaters begin a home-and-home series starting Saturday, Oct. 24 at Matador Soccer Field. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. On Wednesday, Oct. 28, CSUN hosts UC Riverside on Senior Day at 7 p.m. and on Halloween at 7 p.m., the Matadors travel to Orange County to square off with the Anteaters in the regular season finale.
