Nelson 10th at UC Riverside Invitational

RIVERSIDE, Calif. - CSUN senior Elizabeth Nelson finished 10th to lead the Matador women to sixth place finish Saturday at the UC Riverside Highlander Invitational.
The CSUN women amassed a total of 133 points in the 5k while the Matador men took seventh behind Michael Merchan's 23rd place showing.
Nelson clocked a time of 18:09.75 on the 5,000 meter course and was 10th out of 101 runners in the field. Katie Alvarenga also finished in the top 20 as the freshman finished 19th in 18:29.30. Also for CSUN, Jocelyne Ferrufino finished 28th (18:41.17), Rachel Naumann was 36th (18:52.98), Rachael Duriez was 48th (19:10.65), Raeanna Cortez was 50th (19:12.31) and Kimberly Newton finished 70th (19:42.17).
The CSUN women posted a total time of 1:33:23.85 and an average time of 18:40.77.
Merchan paced the Matador men as the freshman ran a time of 18:40.14 on the 8k course. Charlie Nettle finished 27th (18:44.82), Manuel Vargas was 34th (18:52.13), Ricardo Garcia was 41st (19:03.64), Mario Ramirez was 46th (19:13.05), James Silva was 52nd (19:24.27), Elias Powell was 55th (19:31.37), Luis Chavez was 60th (19:52.05), Santiago Gomez was 66th (19:58.00), Ivan Sanchez was 70th (20:15.17), Alex Diaz was 71st (20:37.05) and Franklin DeJong was 73rd (20:53.42).
The CSUN men posted a total time of 1:34:33.78 and an average time of 18:54.76.
Next up for the Matador men and women is the Big West Cross Country Championships (Oct. 31) on the same UCR Ag/Ops course.
