Matadors' Senior Night 10/28 vs. UCR
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN men's soccer team (7-7-2, 3-4-1 Big West) lost 2-0 to visiting UC Irvine Saturday night in a Big West Conference match at Matador Soccer Field. The Anteaters scored in the second minute of action and then added an insurance goal in the 76th to move into a tie with the Matadors at 10 points in the Big West South Division.
Saturday's results did not favor CSUN. In addition to the loss to UCI, UC Riverside came back to defeat Cal State Fullerton 2-1 in overtime. The Titans lead the division with 13 points with UCI and CSUN knotted at 10 and UCR checking in at six. All four teams are still in contention for a spot in the Big West Tournament.
The troubles for CSUN at home continued Saturday when UCI scored 92 seconds into the contest. A free kick was swept into the penalty area where Jorge Lara eventually snuck a low shot into the corner. Thomas Janjigian and Matthew Tilley picked up assists on the play.
CSUN pressed for an equalizer in the first half and nearly had one off the foot of sophomore Papi Diouf. However, his shot caromed off the crossbar and the threat was squelched by a goal kick. Both teams had six shots in the first half.
In the second half, CSUN continued to search for a goal to level the contest. The Matadors' best chance of the frame came off a header from Shane Steffes. Unfortunately, the shot hit off the post and went out for a goal kick.
UCI added an insurance goal in the 76th minute off the foot of Luis Leon. Eduardo Calzada had the assist.
Adam Hobbs made three saves in net for CSUN. Elliott Farmer made one stop for the Anteaters.
The match was very physical and the teams combined for 29 fouls. Four Matadors saw the yellow card during the match: David Turcios, Andrew Rizeq, Tanner Snedigar and Jumoke Hutton.
UCI took all five of its corner kicks in the first half while CSUN took all three of its corners in the second half.
CSUN closes out its 2015 regular season home slate on Wednesday, Oct. 28 with a 7 p.m. match against UC Riverside. Before facing the Highlanders in a vital contest with Big West Tournament implications firmly at stake, the Matadors will honor their seven seniors: Trevor Morley, Victor Vasquez, Carlos Gonzalez, Turcios, Hobbs and Snedigar.
