FULLERTON, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (10-7-1, 3-2-1 Big West) fell by the final of 1-0 in its Big West Conference match to Cal State Fullerton (13-2-1, 5-1 Big West) on Sunday evening at Titan Stadium. A goal in the 74th minute off the foot of Rebecca Wilson broke up a scoreless tie, which proved to be the difference maker.
Â
"I felt like we did some things well in the second half and also in the first half but it just wasn't enough throughout the whole game," said head coach Keith West. "But we did get some players in, they got themselves free and in front of the net. The ball was there for us. As a coach, you want chances and we've gotten chances the whole year. We've proven we can play with the best of them and it's time we get the result against the best of them."
Â
Much like CSUN's previous match on Thursday night against Long Beach State, the Matadors played a scoreless battle for over 70 minutes of play. Against the 49ers, CSUN surrendered the deciding score in the 79th minute in its 1-0 loss. Unfortunately for the Matadors, a similar fate would occur against the Titans.
Â
CSUN played stout defense throughout the first half, preventing several Titan scoring opportunities in the first 45 minutes. Cynthia Tafoya saved four in the half with three coming in the opening 10 minutes of the contest.
Â
Although the Matadors were outshot 9-2 in the first half, CSUN had a good look at the net in the 33rd minute. The Matador offense played the ball down the field and into Fullerton's box near the net. After a cross by Kirsten Von Meter, Kourtney Kutscher received the pass and eyed the left corner of the goal. Her shot though went wide, keeping the game at 0-0.
Â
Cynthia Sanchez had another strong chance at the net for the Matadors shortly after halftime. After a long pass went into the Titan box, the ball would hit off a Fullerton defender into Sanchez's possession heading to the goal. Sanchez attempted to beat a moving Jennifer Stuart but her shot would be wide. Â
Â
The Titans finally broke through in the 73rd minute to take the lead. Wilson worked a give and go with Christina Burkenroad heading to the goal. Tafoya attempted to break up the scoring chance but Wilson found the corner of the net on a low shot.
Â
Trailing by a score, CSUN looked for the equalizer over the final minutes. In perhaps the Matadors' best scoring opportunity of the remainder of the match in the 79th minute, Camille Watson utilized a CSUN long throw to head a shot that appeared destined for the net. However, Stuart dove and knocked the ball out of bounds at just the right moment to keep her team ahead.
Â
Cal State Fullerton would withstand three more CSUN shots including two on goal to hold on for the victory.
Tafoya recorded six saves in the match, tying her season-high she set at UC Davis on October 4.
Â
The Matadors travel to UC Riverside for a contest that may decide CSUN's Big West Conference Tournament hopes. CSUN needs a win against the Highlanders to secure a spot in the conference tournament or a tie to stay alive in the postseason race. A loss would eliminate the Matadors from tournament contention. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.Â
