CSUN Hosts UC Irvine and Cal Poly in Big West Matches

NORTHRIDGE, CA---
CSUN Women's Soccer (7-5-1, 0-0-1 BWC) continues its conference schedule with a pair of home matches at Matador Soccer Field beginning Thursday against UC Irvine (5-6-1, 1-0-0 BWC) at 7 p.m. followed by a Sunday contest with Cal Poly (5-3-5, 1-1-0 BWC) at 1 p.m. The Matadors' Big West Conference home opener against UCI will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network through BigWest.TV. Live stats will also be available for both contests.
The Matadors battled UC Davis to a double overtime scoreless draw in CSUN's Big West Conference opener at Aggie Soccer Field last Sunday.
Cynthia Tafoya tallied a season-high six saves in the match including stopping two shots in the overtime periods. The shutout was her third of the season, as the senior posted two shutouts last month against Detroit (Sept. 6) and at Portland (Sept. 13). In her career, Tafoya is in the top 10 in Matador history with her 12 wins (4th place), eight shutouts (5th place) and 121 saves (6th place).
As a team, the Matadors have posted five shutouts this season including three at Matador Soccer Field. CSUN has limited the opposition to three goals in five home contests.
Despite being shut out for the just the second time this season, CSUN comes into its match with UCI boasting 11 different Matadors with goals on the season. Cynthia Sanchez leads the team with eight goals to go along with two assists and 18 points. Kourtney Kutscher is second on the team with three goals.
CSUN is 7-7-4 all-time against the Anteaters. UCI defeated the Matadors in 2014, 4-3, in double overtime at Anteater Stadium. The Matadors have dropped the last two meetings at home but hold a 3-3-2 all-time home record with UCI.
Against Cal Poly, the Matadors are 5-7-3 all-time but have won two of the past three meetings. CSUN defeated the Mustangs, 2-1, in double overtime at Cal Poly last October.
A Closer Look at UC Irvine
The Anteaters have won three of the last four games and opened up their conference schedule with a 1-0 home victory over UC Riverside last Sunday. UCI went 7-9-3 last season, missing out on postseason play by going 3-4-1 against Big West opponents.
Six different Anteaters have found the back of the net this season, as junior Tatyana Garrett leads the way with two goals while six others have one goal apiece for UCI. Senior Claudia Lopez scored the winning goal against UC Riverside in the 64th minute on Sunday. Sophomore Kiana Palacios has tallied a team-leading three assists to go along with one goal in 2015.
Senior goalkeeper Corey Tobin has played every minute in net for UC Irvine. Tobin has recorded 51 saves and posted five shutouts to go along with a 1.37 goals-against-average.
A Closer Look at Cal Poly
The Mustangs dropped their conference opener at UC Davis, 1-0, in double overtime last Thursday but rebounded with a 7-2 win at Hawai'i on Sunday. Cal Poly hosts Long Beach State in its conference home opener on Thursday before traveling to face CSUN on Sunday. Last season, Cal Poly lost on penalty kicks to LBSU in the conference tournament semifinals.
Team leader in goals, freshman Caitlyn Kreutz, is third in the Big West with seven this season. Senior Elise Krieghoff (Sept. 28) and sophomore Emily Hansen (Sept. 14) have earned Big West Offensive Player of the Week honors for Cal Poly.
Alyssa Giannetti leads the conference with 76 saves and a .874 save percentage. The senior also holds a 0.78 goals-against-average.
