Matadors Drop Straight-Set Decision to Long Beach State

NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN women's volleyball team dropped a straight set decision (25-23, 25-16, 25-23) to visiting Long Beach State Friday night in a Big West match at The Matadome.

The Matadors (6-20, 5-9 Big West) battled the 49ers in two of the three sets as the first and third sets came down to deuce games. CSUN and Long Beach State were tied 23-23 in the opening set when the 49ers tallied the final two points for the win. The Matadors then held a 22-20 lead late in the third only to watch the visitors rally for five of the final six points.

In the penultimate home match of her CSUN career, senior Cieana Stinson had a team-high 10 kills (.214) to go with one ace and one solo block. Freshman Aeryn Owens added nine kills (.286) and junior Julie Haake chipped in seven kills while hitting .400 on 15 swings.

As a team, the Matadors hit .240 with junior setter Maddie Leiphardt handing out 31 assists. The 49ers hit .333 and also had a slight edge in aces (8-6) and blocks (6.0-2.0).

"I think we attacked pretty well for the most part," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "The area that was a little off tonight that wasn't off against Cal State Fullerton and UC Riverside was the passing. We're giving up too many aces and committing too many over passes at the moment. Some of the adjustments we asked the team to make were working which resulted in a good amount of kills."

Nele Barber had a match-high 14 kills to lead three Long Beach State hitters in double figures. The 49ers improve to 21-6 overall and 11-3 in conference play with the win.

CSUN wraps up the homestand as well as the home schedule next Friday (Nov. 20) as the Matadors host UC Riverside at 7 p.m. Prior to the match, CSUN will honor its two seniors Cieana Stinson and Alia Casino.
