Northridge, CA – The CSUN Matadors (2-4) fell to the Loyola Marymount University (LMU) Lions (3-2) on Wednesday night at the Gersten Pavilion, losing by two in overtime, 80-82. The Matadors and Lions played an even game, but CSUN was outscored by the deciding two points in the overtime period.
Â
"I give the guys credit; they gave themselves a chance to win," said CSUN Men's Basketball Head Coach Reggie Theus. "We fought back and that's big, but really if you look at the statistics we pretty much beat them in every category except at the end of the game."
Â
Sophomore Micheal Warren led the Matadors in scoring with 23 points and went 12-for-12 at the free throw line. Forward Zacarry Douglas notched his first career double-double, scoring 15 to go along with 11 rebounds.
Â
The Lions got off to a quicker start than the Matadors in the first half, but CSUN quickly closed the gap and the teams went to the locker rooms at halftime with CSUN trailing 35-34.
Â
Freshman Jason Richardson put the first Matador points on the board in the game and senior Tre Hale-Edmerson contributed a 3-pointer to make it 16-8, LMU, nine minutes into the game. The Matadors battled back from there, taking advantage of several opportunities at the free throw line, and Warren tied it at 16 with eight minutes to go. It was a back-and-forth game for the rest of the half.
Â
Douglas and Warren each scored nine points in the first 20, Drew contributed three assists and two steals and Douglas had five boards. The Matadors were 9-for-9 at the free throw line and shot almost identically to the Lions on field goals and threes.
Â
In the second half, Warren came out swinging to hit the first five points for the Matadors. The Lions stayed a step ahead of CSUN until about midway through, and again the two teams concluded the half at just about even.
Â
With a little more than 5:00 left in the second half, an energy surge on defense and a layup by Warren tied the game at 63. The Lions then pulled ahead by five before Tavrion Dawson hit a 3-pointer, followed by another 3 from Hale-Edmerson to make it 71-70, LMU, with 11 seconds left. LMU then hit two free throws to pull ahead, but Landon Drew hit a last-second 3 to tie the game and take it to overtime.
Â
In the five-minute overtime period, it was again a back-and-forth game, but the Lions scored nine to the Matadors' seven. Drew hit another 3 in the period and Dawson and Douglas contributed two points apiece.
Â
The Matadors made 25 consecutive free throws in the game, but missed the final two in overtime. They hit 45 percent of their field goals, compared to 42 percent for the Lions, were 39 percent to 36 percent on 3-pointers and outshot LMU at the line 93 percent to 77 percent.
Â
Guard Joshua Spiers led the night for LMU, scoring 24 points, six of them 3s. Guard Brandon Brown added 15 points, nine assists and four steals and Adom Jacko scored in double points as well.
Â
The Matadors take on the UCLA Bruins this Sunday, November 29 at 4:00 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion on the Pac-12 Network. The game will also feature a live audio broadcast on the CSUN Sports Network. CSUN then comes home to The Matadome to play Pepperdine on Saturday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. on All Sports Day and Youth Night.
