Matadors shoot 75 percent from 3-point range to defeat Lady Lions
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's basketball team (1-4) defeated Penn State 81-73 in the second game of the Radisson Hotel Chatsworth Thanksgiving Basketball Classic Friday evening at The Matadome. Sophomore Serafina Maulupe scored 16 of her team-high 19 points in the second half as the Matadors held off a late Lady Lions' comeback attempt by shooting a blistering 75 percent (12-of-16) from 3-point range.Â
CSUN led for more than 38 minutes Saturday in its second meeting ever with Penn State. After the Lady Lions scored a lay-up off the opening tip-off, the Matadors shot an even 50 percent (27-of54) for the game and 53.6 percent (15-of-28) in the first half.Â
The Matadors will now set their sights on Georgia in the Championship game on Saturday. The Lady Bulldogs defeated BYU 66-58 in the first game of the event on Friday. The Cougars and Lady Lions will play at 2 p.m. on Saturday and will be followed by the CSUN-Georgia contest at approximately 4:30 p.m.Â
"We saw growth and we saw toughness tonight. Coach Coquese Washington does a great job at Penn State and we have a lot of respect for that program so we were excited for the challenge," CSUN head coach Jason Flowers said. "We had a couple good days of practice and the kids answered the bell today. We have been trying to establish habits and reestablish the culture that is already in place. We saw great effort and resiliency tonight and we couldn't be prouder of our group."Â
Maulupe finished 6-of-11 from the field and knocked down two 3-pointers in 27 minutes of action. She added two rebounds, two assists and two steals in the victory.Â
Freshman Claudia Ramos was CSUN's second-leading scorer, posting a career-high 18 points. She was a perfect 4-of-4 from 3-point range and had four rebounds and a career-high four steals in 29 minutes of action.Â
Junior Emily Cole paced CSUN in the first half, scoring all of her 14 points over the opening 20 minutes. She knocked down a season-high four 3-pointer and added five rebounds, two assists and three steals in 31 minutes.
With the game tied at 8-8, CSUN went on a 16-6 run over the final seven minutes of the first quarter to take a 24-14 lead after 10 minutes. Cole had 11 points and three 3-pointers in the first quarter alone.Â
In the second quarter, CSUN pushed its lead to 37-20 with 5:13 left in the half. Penn State then went on a 13-2 run to get within 39-33 before freshman Cheyenne Allen scored a lay-up with five seconds left to give the Matadors a 41-33 cushion at halftime. In addition to Cole's 14, Allen posted seven points in the first half while Ramos scored nine.Â
After halftime, Penn State made some adjustments and tied the game at 49-49 with 2:15 left in the third quarter. CSUN recaptured the lead on a basket from Maulupe and free throws from senior Jasmine Johnson and led 55-54 after 30 minutes of action.Â
In the fourth quarter, CSUN saw its lead swell from two to seven quickly after a lay-up from Ramos and a 3-pointer from sophomore Tessa Boagni. The Lady Lions would get no closer than five the rest of the way and Ramos made two free throws with 49 seconds left to seal the victory.Â
Boagni finished with nine points, five rebounds and tied a career high with three blocks in 28 minutes of work. Johnson and freshman Channon Fluker each had a team-high six rebounds for the Matadors.Â
CSUN forced 22 Penn State turnovers with Johnson matching Ramos at four steals in the game. With 13 offensive rebounds, CSUN finished with 14 second-chance points, three more than Penn State had off 14 offensive boards.Â
Teniya Page led Penn State with a game-high 26 points. The Lady Lions shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) for the game and 33 percent (4-of-12) from 3-point range.Â
The win is CSUN's first ever against an opponent from the Big Ten Conference. The Matadors had been 0-5 against current members of the league, although all those games were not necessarily played against programs representing the conference at the time. CSUN also avenged a home loss in the 2012 Thanksgiving Basketball Classic Championship game to the Lady Lions.Â
