NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team carded a second round 290 to move up to fourth place after two rounds of the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic Saturday at Ka'anapali Golf Course in Lahaina, Hawai'i.
The Matadors are right in the thick of the team competition with a two round total of 575 (280-295). Oklahoma, ranked 13th, is at the top of the leaderboard at 557 while 12th-ranked Georgia is second at 563 and 35th-ranked North Carolina State is third at 565. A total of 19 teams are competing in the tournament. CSUN's total of 575 through 36 holes is its lowest of the season and possibly sets the Matadors up for their best finish in four fall tournaments.Â
"The guys played smart and confident and with the same mindset as yesterday," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "If we can put together another solid round tomorrow we can finish up the fall on a positive note. If teams beat us that's one thing but I just don't want us to beat ourselves."
Junior Felix Mory vaulted into the top-10 on Saturday after firing a two-under 69. Mory began the day in a tie for 25th after an opening round 71, but moved into contention with four birdies and just two bogeys on Saturday. At two-under 140 for the tournament, Mory is just six shots off the pace heading into Sunday's final round.
Fellow junior Aaron Grimes is also bidding for a top 20 finish as a second round even-par 71 moved him from 32nd to 17th. Grimes matched Mory with four birdies in round two and sits at one-over 143 after 36 holes. Senior Tim Snyder opened the day tied with teammates Mory and Sam Engel at even-par 71 but slipped to a second round 75 and dropped 25th into a tie for 34th at four-over 146.
Engel also had a bit of a struggle on Saturday as he followed up an opening round 71 with a second round 76. He is currently tied for 36th at five-over 147. Joey Varnam rounds out the CSUN squad as the sophomore is tied for 57th at eight-over 150 (75-75).
The Matadors will play their final 18 holes of the fall season as Sunday's round gets underway with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. local time.
