NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN men's golf team finished the fall season on an impressive note Sunday as the Matadors placed fourth out of 19 teams at the Ka'anapali Collegiate Classic in Lahaina, Hawa'i.
CSUN posted a team round of 288 Sunday which kept the Matadors in fourth place with a tournament total of 863. CSUN finished ahead of 22nd-ranked South Carolina, 37th-ranked Kansas and 32nd-place Liberty. The 13th-ranked Oklahoma Sooners won the team title at 15-under 837 while Georgia's Zach Healy won the individual championship by one shot at eight-under 205.
"We were paired with some good teams in Hawai'i and I think that made our guys play smarter," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "We definitely eliminated some of the mistakes we made at our last two tournaments. Different courses call for different types of course management but our mindset was good and this is a good base for us to build on."
Juniors Aaron Grimes and Felix Mory led the Matadors as each tied for 15th place at one-over 214. Grimes (72-71-71) tied for CSUN's low round of the day with an even-par 71 while Mory posted a three-over 74. Grimes, who had three birdies and three bogeys, was one-under on the back nine and one-over on the front. Mory, who posted rounds of 71-69-74, managed a single birdie on Sunday.
Sam Engel matched Grimes with three birdies on his way to a final round one-over 72. The CSUN junior wound up tied for 29th at six-over 219 with rounds of 71-76-72. Sophomore Joey Varnam made a move up the leaderboard Sunday by matching Grimes' round of 71 which vaulted him from 57th into a tie for 44th. Varnam wound up with scores of 75-75-71 to finish at eight-over 221. Senior Tim Snyder posted a final round six-over 77 to finish tied for 54th at 10-over 223 following rounds of 71-75-77.
CSUN will be off from tournament competition until Feb. 1 when the Matadors compete at the LMU Invitational in Lake Las Vegas, NV.
