CSUN Drops 64-49 Decision at Hawai'i

CSUN struggled mightily from the floor in dropping its second-straight league game. The Matadors shot just 17.9 percent (5-of-28) in the first half and finished at 25.4 percent (15-of-59) for the game. Subtracting the Matadors' 3-for-7 effort from 3-point range and CSUN finished at 23.1 percent (12-of-52) on its two-point field goal attempts.
The Matadors also lost the rebounding battle by a large margin, 55-35. Hawai'i finished with 19 offensive rebounds and had 34 points in the paint. The Matadors finished with 10 offensive rebounds and 20 points in the paint.
Sharpe scored 14 points and posted five rebounds and three assists in 34 minutes of action. After finishing 8-of-10 from the free throw line, Sharpe now has 339 free throws for her career, the second-most in program history.
CSUN trailed 8-0 early and made just five of its first 28 shots from the field. Both starting frontcourt players, Tessa Boagni and Camille Mahlknecht, picked up two fouls in the first half.
CSUN stayed in the game in the first half due to its prowess at the free throw line. Caroline Gilling made all three of her attempts on a 3-point foul and Emily Cole added a pair from the charity stripe as well. CSUN finished 9-of-12 (75 percent) from the field in the first half.
Leading 23-19, the Rainbow Wahine unloaded a 12-0 run to take a 35-19 lead into halftime. The Matadors shot just 5-of-28 (17.9 percent) in the first half and closed the half having missed their last 11 shots.
In the second half, CSUN made its first two baskets. However, Hawai'I made three of its first four and the Matadors trailed by 22 minutes into the frame.
Cinnamon Lister made the Matadors' first 3-pointer of the day to pull CSUN within 45-27 with 15 minutes to play. The Matadors continued to fight uphill and trailed 49-32 with 11:43 left. Â
CSUN would get no closer than 14 the rest of the way. Despite the struggles, CSUN outscored Hawai'i 30-29 in the second half.
Jasmine Johnson finished with five points and a team-high six rebounds off the bench for CSUN. Ashlee Guay added six points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 31 minutes.
The Matadors remain on the road for its next game, a contest at UC Davis on Thursday, Feb. 5. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m.
