Pitching Powers CSUN to Pair of Wins at GCU Invitational
2/21/2015 12:00:00 AM | Softball
PHOENIX, Ariz. --- The CSUN softball team (11-3) defeated Grand Canyon 6-5 and Weber State 4-2 Saturday at the GCU Invitational. Freshman Zoe Conley and senior Brianna Elder turned in a pair of impressive outings in defeating the Antelopes and Wildcats.
"I think Zoe and Brianna stuck to their game plans today. They attacked the strike zone and limited their free passes. That makes it easier for the defense, which can stay locked in," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "I think we will be successful if we continue to work off each other. I think the team did a good job of seeing pitches today and made good things happen."Â
The Matadors close out their time in the Sonoran Desert Sunday morning with a game against Grand Canyon. First pitch is slated for 10:30 a.m. PT.Â
Weber State Recap
The CSUN softball team defeated Weber State 4-2 behind another strong pitching performance from senior Brianna Elder (5-1).
Despite allowing a two-run home run in the seventh, she finished with six strikeouts and only three hits allowed in recording her fifth win of the season. The victory snapped a two-game losing streak against the Wildcats.Â
Elder retired the side in order four times Saturday. She had one walk and now is 5-1 with a 2.69 ERA and 57 strikeouts in 41.2 innings of work.
Offensively, CSUN recorded five extra-base hits in the win. Ariana Wassmer had a pair of doubles to tie her for the team lead with four on the year. Katie Hooper recorded her third double and Maylynn Mitchell and Savannah Horvath each homered for CSUN.Â
Mitchell broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the second. Wassmer doubled with two outs and then came around on Mitchell's second home run of the season. The junior from Seattle, Wash. has 12 RBIs on the year.Â
Hooper added an RBI double in the bottom of the fifth to score Kaitlin Toerner. In the sixth, Horvath started the inning with her second home run of the season.Â
Grand Canyon Recap
The CSUN softball team (10-3) defeated Grand Canyon 6-5 in its first game Saturday at the GCU Invitational in Phoenix, Ariz. The Matadors held a 6-0 lead into the bottom of the seventh before the host Antelopes struck for five runs and nearly spoiled a solid outing from freshman Zoe Conley.
A freshman from Berkeley, Calif., Conley (3-1) tossed a career-high 6.1 innings of work in defeating Grand Canyon. She scattered four hits and finished with five strikeouts while lowering her season ERA to 1.58 in 26.2 innings of work.Â
CSUN cruised for most of the game behind its offense. The Matadors finished with nine hits and sophomores Taylor Nate and Taylor Glover each finished a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate. Glover stole her ninth base of the season to go with two runs and a walk. Nate finished with three RBIs and both finished with a double.Â
The duo combined in the first to give CSUN a 1-0 lead. Glover reached on a single and moved to second on a sac bunt from Katie Hooper. She then stole third and scored on Nate's RBI double down the left-field line.
CSUN doubled its lead as Glover scored on an RBI single from freshman Savannah Horvath in the third.Â
In the fourth inning, CSUN scored four runs on three hits. Cortney Horne singled to start the inning and Carissa Sherman replaced her as a pinch runner. Sherman promptly stole second base, Maylynn Mitchell was hit by a pitch and Conley added a bunt single to load the bases.Â
Kaitlin Toerner reached on a fielder's choice and got an RBI to keep the bases loaded. Mitchell then scored on a wild pitch and Conley and Toerner moved into scoring position. Glover walked and with one out, Nate singled to center to score two runs. Nate now has nine RBIs on the year.Â
Things looked good for CSUN until Grand Canyon came up facing its final three outs. Crystal Maas came into relieve Conley and gave up five runs and three home runs while getting two outs. An error in the field meant that only two of the runs were earned and Conley came back to record the final out of the game.Â
