2/27/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Basketball
Guay entered the game with 1,623 points, 10 shy of passing Ofa Tulikihihifo for the most in program history. After getting five in the first half and a lay-up early in the second, Guay knocked down a 3-pointer to overtake Tulikihihifo.
She finished 5-of-12 from the field with two 3-pointers and three free throws. She also grabbed seven rebounds and dished out nine assists. She now has 517 career assists, a program record and the eighth-most in Big West Conference history.
"It is always exciting to reach a new milestone, but I am more proud of my team for competing and getting the win tonight," Guay said. "We were hitting our shots tonight. The team has been getting in the gym more to work on shooting and that is paying dividends. We are playing for each other and when you do that, good things are going to happen."Â
Not to be outdone, Cinnamon Lister finished with 10 points in the game to surpass 1,000 points for her career. She finished with three 3-pointers and one assist in 19 minutes. Lister has 147 3-pointers in 60 career games at CSUN.Â
Finally, Emily Cole knocked down a career-high five 3-pointers to finish with a career-high 15 points. She added three rebounds and two steals in 25 minutes off the bench.
"I took the shots that the offense created for me. We did a good job of moving the ball tonight and that set me up for some good looks," Cole said. "I am shooting a lot more now outside of practice. I try to shoot at least twice after practice each day and that is helping me."
For the game, CSUN tied a program record with 15 3-pointers and the Matador bench outscored the Titans' 30-0.
The Matadors' fifth-straight win, CSUN never trailed in Thursday's contest. CSUN jumped out to a 17-5 lead after a 3-pointer from Guay early in the first half. Cal State Fullerton got within five several times, but CSUN pulled away for a 36-25 lead at halftime.
In the second half, CSUN kept the Titans at bay until Cal State Fullerton closed to within four points with 5:20 to play. From there, the Matadors rolled off an 11-3 run to close the game.Â
The 19 regular-season victories matches the 1998-99 team for the most in CSUN's Division I history. That team finished with 21 wins, the most in the program's Division I history. The 1988-89 team holds the school record with 22 wins.Â
CSUN shot 37.3 percent from the field (22-of-59) and 38.5 percent (15-of-39) from 3-point range. Both teams finished with 31 rebounds and the Matadors forced 21 Titan turnovers.Â
The Matadors remain on the road for their next game, a contest at UC Riverside on Saturday, Feb. 28 at SRC Arena. Tip off is slated for 5 p.m.Â
