NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (16-4) defeated Sacramento State 8-0 in five innings before falling 7-6 to Bakersfield Friday in a pair of non-conference games at Matador Diamond. In CSUN's first win over the Hornets since 2003, Taylor Nate hit a career-high two home runs and drove in three while Zoe Conley picked up her seventh win of the year. In the second game, Katie Hooper hit a solo home run to put the Matadors ahead 6-5 in the seventh, but CSUB rallied for a pair of runs to snap the Matadors' winning streak.Â
"We hit the ball well today and are doing a good job at the plate," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "The gameplan will be the same tomorrow. We are not going to be on our heels because we lost. We are still going to go out there and play our game and finish this week on a strong note."
Sacramento State Recap
CSUN (16-3) picked up its eighth-straight win with a convincing 8-0, five-inning victory over the Hornets. The game was the first between the two schools since the 2003 season and CSUN's first victory in the series since 2002.Â
Taylor Nate led the offense with two home runs and three RBIs. She hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third and a two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth. For the year, Nate has four home runs and 13 RBIs.
Taylor Glover went 2-for-2 with two runs and a season-high two RBIs and two stolen bases. Carissa Sherman went 2-for-3 with two runs and her first triple of the season. Katie Hooper went 1-for-2 with a run scored and two RBIs.
Sherman started things quickly for CSUN with a triple to begin the bottom of the first. She then came around to score on an RBI double from Glover, who then scored on an RBI single from Hooper. Cortney Horne then added the third RBI of the inning with a single to right to score Hooper.Â
Nate's solo home run made it 4-0 in the third and CSUN struck for four more runs in the fourth. Appearing in her first game in over a year, Tara Kliebenstein drew a walk and scored on an RBI single from Glover. Hooper picked up a sacrifice fly to score Sherman and Nate's two-run blast brought in Glover.Â
Conley (7-1) cruised to her seventh win of the season. Â She scattered two hits and one walk in four innings of work. Jordan Sauceda tossed a quiet fifth to secure the victory.Â
Bakersfield Recap
CSUN (16-4) lost 7-6 to Bakersfield in a see-saw game that saw several lead changes. The Roadrunners scored two runs in the seventh inning to complete the comeback after the Matadors edged ahead 6-5 on a solo home run by Katie Hooper.Â
Savannah Horvath hit her fourth home run of the season and had two RBIs. Hooper also had two RBIs and the home run was her team-leading seventh of the season.Â
CSUN played as the visitors against the Roadrunners and Carissa Sherman started things with a single in the first. She would eventually score on a wild pitch with two outs in the inning.
Bakersfield immediately tied the game in the bottom of the first off CSUN starter Brianna Elder. However, the senior kept CSUB off the scoreboard for the next two innings to help the Matadors build a 4-1 lead.Â
Horvath had an RBI single that scored Aliyah Ricks in the second. Hooper added a sacrifice fly in the third that scored Taylor Glover. Finally, Horvath homered to left to start the top of the fourth.Â
Bakersfield got back into the game in the bottom of the fourth. Daphne Pofek started the inning in the circle for CSUN and with one out, she allowed a walk. That started a sequence where the Roadrunners got an infield single, successfully executed a squeeze play and drew both a bases loaded walk and hit by pitch during the frame to take a 5-4 lead.Â
Elder re-entered during the fourth inning, but she was eventually lifted for Zoe Conley, who recorded the final two outs of the inning via strikeout.Â
The Matador tied the game at 5-5 in the sixth. Ricks singled and moved to second on an illegal pitch. Horvath drew a walk and Tara Kliebenstein moved them up a base with a sacrifice bunt. Crystal Maas then reached on a fielder's choice that scored Ricks.
CSUN nearly pulled off its own squeeze, but Maylynn Mitchell's bunt rolled perfectly up the line and allowed the third baseman to tag Horvath.Â
Hooper homered with one out in the top of the seventh. In the bottom half, Bakersfield singled to start the inning before Conley recorded a strikeout. A single pushed the runner on first all the way to third and a sacrifice fly tied the game. The next batter singled up the middle to complete the comeback.Â
Conley went 3.1 innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs in taking the loss. She added six strikeouts in relief. Elder tossed 3.0 innings with five hits and two strikeouts.Â
The Matadors close out their week with a single game Saturday, facing College of Charleston at 1:30 p.m. at Matador Diamond. College of Charleston and Sacramento State will play the first game of the day, which begins at 11 a.m.Â
