NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - After dropping two of the first three matches of the day, the CSUN Sand Volleyball team stormed back to take the final three matches resulting in a 4-1 victory over the TCU Horned Frogs Tuesday at the Matador Sand Volleyball Facility.
The win, CSUN's second straight, was the Matadors' first win in their new home facility and improved the team to 2-2 on the season.
The afternoon opened with the No. 4 and No. 5 matches along with a single extra match. CSUN's Nada Dragovic and Alia Casino put the Matadors into the win column as the duo improved to 3-1 this season with a 15-21, 21-17, 15-13 win over Chyna Perkins and Chyanne Perkins. In the next match to go final, Cieana Stinson and Stephanie Serna fell to TCU's Blaire Pickens and Sarah Grantham in the No. 4 match, 21-13, 21-23, 15-12.
In the extra match that didn't count towards the team scoring, TCU's Sarita Mikals and Mia Swanegan held off CSUN's Lauren Conati and Brianna Johnson by the score of 21-15, 19-21, 15-10.
With the two teams tied at one win apiece heading into the final three matches, Mahina Haina and Katie Sato made quick work of Macy Capen and Ashley Smith winning 21-14, 21-18. Then in the No. 1 match on center court, CSUN's Casey Hinger and Kelcie Randazzo clinced the win for the Matadors by defeating Natalie Gower and Shane Peters 21-18, 21-12.
That set up the final match at No. 3 and the duo of Julie Haake and Nicolette Pinkney won the final two sets after dropping the first set to Sutton Sunstrom and Alexis Heist 21-19. Haake and Pinkney pulled out a 21-19 win in the second to force a third and deciding set that the CSUN duo win in thrilling fashion 15-13.
"We're still collectively figuring out what the skill set is in playing sand volleyball," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "We've got to get over the hump of thinking too much but it's coming together and we're playing better each week."
CSUN travels to Long Beach Thursday as the Matadors take on No. 7 Pacific and No. 5 Long Beach State at the 49ers' Campus Courts.
