LA JOLLA, Calif. -
Freshman Madeleine Sanchez notched a hat trick and Marisa Young and Shannon Hovanesian had two goals each as the seventh-ranked CSUN Matadors (12-8) shut down the No. 20 UC San Diego Tritons (11-14) in an 8-4 victory on Thursday evening at Canyonview Aquatic Center. Young added an assist, steal and field block hours after being honored as CSUN's Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the Big West Conference.
After knocking off Hawai'i last week, the Matadors continued to ride momentum in the non-conference win over the Tritons. A low-scoring first quarter ended 1-1 before a pair of CSUN goals gave the team a 3-2 advantage going into halftime.
The Matadors added three goals to take a two-goal lead after three quarters and tacked on two more while holding UCSD scoreless in the fourth. Goalkeeper Kiernan Davis recorded eight saves and had a steal as CSUN won its second consecutive road match.
Sanchez had four steals on the night while Hovanesian chipped in two assists and two steals of her own. Kelcie Ferreira picked up four steals as well and Taitum Herrington scored the other goal for the Matadors.
The team will have a week off from competition before returning to Matador Pool to host its annual Alumnae Match on Saturday, March 21. The Matadors will remain at home the next week, taking on both Long Beach State (March 28) and UC Irvine (March 29) in Big West Conference matches. All three contests will begin at noon.
