LONG BEACH, Calif. - Aaron Grimes had a solid debut for the CSUN men's golf team on Monday but the Matadors are 11th after two rounds of the Del Walker Intercollegiate at Virginia Country Club.
Grimes, making his CSUN debut after transferring from College of the Canyons, carded rounds of 73-70 on Monday and is tied for 20th at three over-par 143. In shooting even par in the afternoon, Grimes fired three birdies, along with three bogeys, and the rest pars.
"Aaron has played a ton of tournament golf so I know what he's capable of," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "He's a consistent player and I hope it holds up again tomorrow."
Seniors Steven Molumby and Michael O'Connor are both tied for 38th at seven-over 147. Molumby posted rounds of 74-73 while O'Connor carded a 73 followed by a 74.
The scoring for the Matadors' five-man squad was rounded out by Aden Louez who is tied for 55th at 10-over 150 (77-73) and Tim Snyder who is alone in 62nd place at 14-over 154 (78-76).
Joey Varnam and Luis Calderon are competing for CSUN as individuals with Varnam tied for 51st at nine-over 149 (79-70) and Calderon 63rd at 18-over 158 (80-78).
As a team, the Matadors (587) are 11th in the 11-team field after a 297 in the morning round and a 290 in the afternoon. UC Irvine (561) has a three-shot team lead over Campbell (564) with host Long Beach State (568) seven shots back.
"The guys are making mental errors and then compounding that with poor golf," added Bracken. "We just threw away so many shots today but I've said it before we're very capable of regrouping and posting some good scores tomorrow."
The final round gets underway Tuesday morning with tee times starting at 8:30 a.m.
