Wyoming Edges CSUN 4-3
3/20/2015 12:00:00 AM | Women's Tennis
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (10-2) lost 4-3 to Wyoming Friday afternoon at Matador Tennis Complex. Playing without a pair of their top players, the Matadors nearly pulled off the victory against a tough Cowgirls squad.
The Matadors took on Wyoming without the services of junior Jessica Warren and freshman Kiryang Kim. The duo usually are in CSUN head coach Gary Victor's line-up for both doubles and singles, so their absence meant others had to step in to compete.
In doubles action, CSUN's sensational sophomore duo of Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei improved to 11-1 on the season with a 6-2 victory in the top draw. The duo is 28-4 in its career as a doubles tandem.
Unfortunately, Wyoming won the other two doubles matches to claim the early 1-0 lead.
In singles action, Hsu picked up a straight-set victory on Jim Gorman Court in the top draw. Poei also claimed a singles win and senior Criss Rodriguez was the third Matador to find success.
However, the Cowgirls were victorious in the second, fifth and sixth draws to claim the match.
"I could not be more proud of how we competed today even though we were without Jessica and Kiryang," CSUN head coach Gary Victor said. "We gave ourselves a chance to win against a very tough team minus a third of our starting line-up. Mickey and Kristen played outstanding in both doubles and singles action. We are taking the positive approach to how good we can be when fully healthy."
The Matadors return to action on Wednesday, March 25 with a home match against nationally-ranked Dartmouth at 2 p.m.
