The No. 7 Matadors (13-9, 2-1 Big West) were unable to overcome an early deficit to visiting No. 5 UC Irvine (15-6, 2-0 Big West), as CSUN dropped its conference match 11-7 on Sunday afternoon at Matador Pool. MacKenzy Fowler and Katie Kammer each racked up two goals in the contest for CSUN.
Kiernan Davis saved 10 UCI shots in the contest to stretch her season total to 148.
The Matadors dug a hole when UCI scored two early goals in the first four minutes of the first quarter. Kelcie Ferreira was able to cut the UCI lead in half with a score to trim the lead to 2-1.
Kelcy Barott and Fowler added a goal each in the second period, but UCI managed to stretch the lead even further to 6-3 by scoring three goals of its own in the quarter.
After a back and forth third quarter, UCI still remained ahead at 9-6. Two fourth period scores by the Anteaters stretched their advantage to 11-6 heading into the final minutes.
A Kammer score with about two minutes to play cut into the deficit but the Matadors would not get any closer, as UCI held on for a 11-7 victory.
CSUN resumes its conference play with a road test at UC Davis on Saturday afternoon. Game time is set for 12 p.m.
