BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - The CSUN Sand Volleyball team picked up its first win of the 2015 season Saturday as the Matadors defeated Cal Poly 4-1 to earn a split in a pair of dual matches at CSU Bakersfield's Student Recreation Center Barnes Beach Volleyball Complex.
In Saturday's opener, the host Roadrunners defeated the Matadors 4-1 with CSUN's lone win coming in the No. 5 match as Alia Casino and Nada Dragovic defeated Star Tucker-Campbell and Luiza Martins, 21-17, 21-11.
The top two matches went three sets as CSU Bakersfield claimed both contests. Casey Hinger and Kelcie Randazzo fell to Mariah Alvidrez and Molly O'Hagan, 21-19, 19-21, 15-9 and Mahina Haina and Katie Sato dropped the No. 2 match 21-12, 14-21, 15-10.
"It was a very competitive match, Bakersfield is a good team," said CSUN head coach Jeff Stork. "We just need a little more time in the sand, if we can just execute a little better we'll be fine."
In its second dual of the day, CSUN defeated Cal Poly for its first victory of the season. Last season, the Matadors didn't pick up their first win until their final match of the season.
Hinger and Randazzo improved to 2-1 this season after defeating Taylor Nelson and Raeann Greisen in three tight sets (21-16, 17-21, 16-14) in the No. 1 match. Haina and Sato then won for the first time this season, defeating Nicole Kessler and Caihla Petiprin, 21-17, 21-12.
The Matadors' No. 3 team of Julie Haake and Nicolette Pinkney also got into the win column for the first time with a commanding 21-12, 21-15 victory over Katie Conroy and Bailey Roach.
The lone CSUN team to fall to the Mustangs, Cieana Stinson and Stephanie Serna lost to Taylor Gruenewald and Anna Gorman at No. 4 by the score of 21-13, 21-12.
In the No. 5 match, Dragovovic and Casino continued their strong early season play as the CSUN duo dominated Cal Poly's Casey Carroll and Shannon Fouts, 21-5, 21-7
"We've already seen a lot of development and improvement in the early part of the season," added Stork. "We had a good day all around today."
