"I thought our pitchers did a good job today. They really compliment each other well. We made some good plays defensively and did a good job of putting pressure on them with our at-bats," CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers said. "Hooper is hitting the ball real well and taking advantage of when pitchers miss. She is really playing with confidence right now."Â
Game One Recap
The CSUN softball team defeated UCSB 9-4 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday at Campus Diamond in Santa Barbara, Calif. Sophomore Katie Hooper smashed two home runs and drove in three as the Matadors snapped a four-game losing streak to the Gauchos.
Hooper hit a solo shot and a two-run shot in the first game Saturday to raise her season total to 14 home runs. She is now third in school history with the 14 deep flies and the three RBIs raised her season total to 46, tying her for sixth in school history for a single season.
In the circle, Zoe Conley (14-4) tossed five innings and allowed one earned run to pick up the victory. She had four strikeouts and one walk in the victory. Brianna Elder tossed the final two innings and did not allow a hit to go with two strikeouts.Â
Senior Kaitlin Toerner had a season-high three hits in the game and freshman Savannah Horvath added two hits. Horvath stole her 10th base of the season and added an RBI while Toerner scored a run. Sophomore Carissa Sherman scored two runs in the win.
CSUN jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first when Taylor Nate and Horvath collected two-out RBI singles.
A UCSB three run home run in the bottom of the first gave the Gauchos a lead. Hooper tied the game in the top of the third with her solo home run.
In the top of the fourth, CSUN pushed three runs across to take a 6-3 lead. Toerner scored on a wild pitch and two more runs scored on a Gaucho error.
In the sixth, Hooper launched a two-run home run for her 14th of the season. In the seventh, CSUN tacked on a run when Maylynn Mitchell picked up a sac fly RBI to score Brianna Elder.

The Matadors took a 4-0 decision in the second game of the doubleheader behind a complete-game shutout from senior Brianna Elder.Â
Elder (15-3) scattered five hits and two walks to go with seven strikeouts. The shutout was her third of the season.Â
At the plate, Ariana Wassmer went 2-for-3 with her first home run of the season and two RBIs. Taylor Glover and Katie Hooper each had two hits in the game and Hooper added her fourth RBI of the day. She now has 47 RBIs on the season, tying her for fourth in school history for a single season.
